Astra 1.6 Petrol ground to halt, wont turn over
Discussion
Just wondering if there's any shared experience or common faults that causes this.
Astra 1.6 Petrol, 52Plate.
It was driving along and the engine died. Plastic burning smell and smoke through heater vents into cabin.
Now it will not crank over on the key. The engine will turn by hand. Attempts to bump start not successful, sounds like it might almost want to fire but doesnt. Ignition lights come on as per usual, no more smoke appears when ignition on.
Any suggestions?
Cheers!

A common fault on these is for the ignition switch stick in the start position, causing the starter motor to operate while the engine is running.
This burns out the starter and can cause the switch to melt.
If this has happened, you will need a new starter motor and ignition switch.
If this is the cause of your problem, also check that the actual ignition lock is not stiff and lightly lubricate it when replacing the switch.
