I was thinking of setting up a Heath Robinson style water spray system for my FMIC, using washer jets, in order to keep intake temperatures down. Question is, do they actually make any meaningful difference in hot weather or will I be wasting my time?

For those running such systems - do you run an on/off switch which produces a continuous spray, or a push button that you just hold down every so often?

FWIW, I have a "proper" AEM Water/Methanol injection system about to be installed too, to keep cylinder temps down.

It can have a very marginal effect. Not really worth the effort unless it was an absolute last resort to try and get a little bit more cooling.
And it does of course assume your IC core is far too small, badly situated in terms of airflow and getting warm.

Hello fellow MK-er!

I think to have any significant effect you'd need to have an atomised spray rather than just a bit of water splashing about. The benefits come from evaporative cooling, and you need it to happen very quickly, and that means you need a massive surface area. The way to do that is to have finely atomised water. Just wetting the metalwork wouldn't have much effect since the wetted area is still relatively small and you won't get much evaporation - the water would tend to go straight through with the air and end up plastered on the front of the engine.

ETA:

I've got a couple of spare aquamist jets you'd be welcome to borrow for a few days if you want to give it a try, but they'd need more pressure than a simple windscreen washer pump would provide (they run at around 100 psi).

Sounds like a bit of a waste of time then, I won't bother! Just thought it might make a subtle difference.

You'll destroy me I reckon. At the minute I'm suffering a mysterious overheating issue so if you truly are the "Best mechanic in the world" you can help me fix it! biggrin
