Has anyone used a set for winter?

I seem drawn to getting larger wheels so my current ones will be spare. Would the Monaro on winters be better than the Insignia 4x4 on summer tyres?

I actually dreamed of having mods fitted at the fish so I know I need to do something......

Have been looking at snow chains as mine's a daily driver so have no option but to use it in the snow.

I run them on my s type r jag 265 35 18 , they are amazing not just better in the snow but work very well in cold temps it as much about how the Tyres made as the tread pattern , the don't need to be very knobbly to work some work by filling with snow then use it to grip , just take them off as soon as it warms a bit or you will kill them

There is another option - snow socks!

I have a pair for the rear of my R8 that live in the boot just in case. They're only designed to be used for very short distances, just enough to get you un-stuck. Have to take them off as soon as you're able to else they'll fall off anyway. For me that means I can get the car out of the estate and onto the main road, or vice versa. Once on the main road it's all gravy, baby!

I thought for £70 for a pair I would try them rather than many hundreds of pounds on new rubber.

At the end of the day, if we choose to drive these cars in the worst of British conditions then like the previous poster says, there's nothing we can do about the other numpties that choose to drive into us.

It would be a brave man to use a heavy and torquey rear wheel drive motor in snowy conditions!...winter tyres will certainly help a lot, particularly in wet & cold conditions. If you have no choice other than to use the Monaro/R8 as a DD in the winter, i would say good quality winter tyres are a 'Must'

Ideally though, buy a Subaru for this winter, they are phenomenal with good winter tyres on thumbup

ps. people who knock winter tyres are generally those that have never used them in the conditions they were designed for!

There is a difference between winter Tyres and snow Tyres , winter Tyres have more silica in them , once you try them you will always use them

And Snow socks etc are emergency use only. Not for driving distances in the snow, and certainly not for driving on tarmac.

Snow tyres can be driven on anything. The difference they make truly is amazing, just make sure you buy 4.

Given the current weather you might be better with water wings!

Seriously though - I bought a can of 'spray on' snow chains last year (its not a joke)

It works - really helped with a 3.2 GT Alfa on a snowy road. I am carrying a can in all our cars now

If you have to use your pride and joy in the winter please look after it, more and more of my customers are using winter tyres on 4x4's but can't get my head round how many people are buying for their cars.

The difference is night and day with a proper winter tyre fitted once the temp is 7c and below especially in the wet and in snow and ice you will not catch your breath. thumbup

We keep most of the 4x4 and SUV fitments in stock but have to order in other car sizes.

Take a look at Vredestein winter tyres.

Fitted winter tyres to the R8 last winter and used it as a daily driver, I also live on a very steep hill.

They didn't really get tested to much though, as it was quite mild and we didn't get much snow. But I never failed to get up the hill and home.

It was quite an outlay for the winter rubber, but while they're fitted my other tyres are taking a holiday for a few months.

Well worth the initial outlay IMO.

I have got the very good (IMO) Hankook iCept Evo's on my motor at the moment, a high performance, Xtra Load winter tyre.

Well worth a look...although i did struggle to find them last year, they eventually came from a very good outfit (great customer service) called 'GoodGrip'...they sourced the tyres i wanted in Sweden and they arrived within 10 days biggrin

Thread reincarnation alert!

Sign seen outside a garage in St Peter's Way, Northampton this weekend:

Get ready for Winter! Winter tyres available HERE!

Well, the nights DO start drawing in after this week!

(Doesn't seem five minutes since I took my winter tyres off!)

They've probably only just received their full order for last winter. It did go on. eek

I can't believe how many false starts there were to Spring, this year. I think I changed them over 3 or 4 times.

It says in the R8 manual that you must not fit winter tyres.

It may only be a problem if you need to make a claim and the insurance company find out. i don't think there is a technical reason other than the speed rating etc?

Yep. Non-sensical statement. Speed rating is the only rationale, but this affects lots of cars.....

It was cheaper to buy a Seat Leon Cupra 1.8T with T&T...which I'm still using. I doubt I'd still be using the tyres smile
