The above is now in the paint shop, so soon I can start putting it back together. But before I put the motor back in I am thinking of upgrades. Firstly does anyone know who and how much to skim off the standard flywheel. Secondly a cam change - how much? how many more bhp? how easy? The engine is standard apart from headers, no cats, and the biggest air filter and box I could fit in.
Will start to add pictures as it goes back together.

cam is easy if you have the right rods to hold lifters up.
Gains can be up to 100rwhp if you go mental on it.

But you need to decide where you want your power.

Definitely swap the stock one out though its pretty bad.
But expect to pay for a tune to sort it.
Daily driver is around 220/224 going up to 230/234 for a pretty hardcore one.
You can go bigger, but it will be st without loads of supporting mods IMO.

Good to hear, smile but sad to see you still have the Monaro for sale.frown

I put my trust in Monkfish. I'm sure Roger would be happy to advise in what has been fitted to others, and what he thinks would serve you best. You can then decide whether to go with his guidance, or ask elsewhere.

My Blue Monaro has been sold and has gone to Italy, bought by a Brit girl working over there for a car company that makes a certain red car!
I know I will need to do a tune after cam change so will be need a new licence. Do you still need special tools for cam change if you turn the motor upside down?

Leave the flywheel alone.

And cam will in part depend on any emissions constraints. If you're tested as an older car, then fill your boots.

If you turn the engine upside down, then there is no chance of the lifters falling out.
I presume you intend doing the cam swap with the heads in place ?

The other upright option other than the tool down the oil gallery, is magnets to hold the lifters up, stuck down the pushrod holes.

Or last option, just do it and hope they dont fall out of the lifter tray. This did work for me when I tried.
If the engine's on a stand that's not so bad, if the engine was in the car and a lifter fell...it would be rather annoying.

As much as I like a gamble playing Russian roulette with lifters isn't fun all you need is 2 metal rods about 5mm with a Schafer on one end slide them in once you have cam cover off and the push rods out of the way

A mk2 export only needs to meet 2-5% CO so need to worry about emissions. I would suggest a cat delete and ECU tune as well - you will need to keep the first O2 Sensor though unless you set the ecu to only use open loop fueling (no o2 feedback adjustment via closed loop). Probably worth 2% to 5% power gain just by disabling the the emission control from the E40 ECU.
