... and maybe I should have gone to the forum's favorite Monaro specialist.
I got my car back from the diff rebuild earlier today....
A job that was quoted at £300 ended up as £1300. This in itself is bad, but what's worse is that my diff seems no better, perhaps even worse
Obviously if I'd know it was going to end up as a £1300 job, I would have bought a complete unit off the shelf at MF, although their cost doesn't include seized carriers, so who knows where the final number would have wound up!
The 3.9 motive performance gear (as people warned) whines a bit, but not enough to drive me nuts... Acceleration is better, but perhaps not as night and day as I'd expected.
Slow speed maneuvering however is not pleasurable... is there any chance that this might get better after a few miles? It seems to clunk and grind more than it did before the rebuild, which was done by a reputable workshop...
Some love for the big Aussie has been lost - please help!

ouch
guess your previous post didnt work "All I'm left with is the cost of installtion, so don't want to spend a fortune on more new bits as well..!"
don't like the sound of your new diff sounds like its more likely off a tractor
I would take it to SRR tomorrow and get some 2nd/3rd opinions whether its how it should be. goodluck

Yeap - not impressed at the moment, but maybe some of the clunking is just 'normal' for a Monaro drive train.... and maybe some friction modifier will help with the 'chatter'.
The guys said they used a 'quality' Millers diff oil, which contains some friction modifier (85w140 I think).
I'll be down at SRR tomorrow and hopefully someone will give me some good news!!

Rare we cant get the carriers out. Only been defeated on that twice. The cost difference between the quoted £300 and your diff rebuild was significant.... if I'd be quoted £1300 I wouldn't have hesitated to spend the extra last bit and get it done once and properly.

Not sure why the rolling eyes... Sorry if that came across wrong - I don't doubt that you guys know what you're doing with these cars, hence I probably should have gone to you to start with.

We do try to quote realistically what it will actually cost. Sadly, that sometimes loses us the job. As in this case. But id rather that than come back to you with a bill significantly higher than quoted. For reference, the diff price is one of our "fixed price" upgrades. The cost difference between the quoted £300 and your diff rebuild was significant.... if I'd be quoted £1300 I wouldn't have hesitated to spend the extra last bit and get it done once and properly.

What reason did they give for the increased cost?
Issues when fitting / removing, seized carriers that needed to be cut out by a machine shop & replacement parts that were ordered from MF.When the diff came off the car, they did say that the cost was going to spiral, so I probably should have swallowed the initial £100-200 of labor and booked it in for a complete 3.9 unit from MF..
Oh well, live and learn!
See you all tomorrow

(85w140 I think).

This is the wrong viscosity fluid for a standard Monaro diff, the viscosity should be 75W140. It may be that this is causing some opf the problems although that should disappear when the diff has warmed up. Also it must have an API rating of GL5 (DO NOT use GL4). Castrol Syntrax is what I've used although Royal Purple is also used by many on here.

The royal purple works well as it has a frction modifier in it so it shuts the diffs upCastrol Syntrax is what I've used although Royal Purple is also used by many on here.
