Sorry to announce this in this thread but if you keep reading you will see why....
I just brought a 2 year old BMW 3 series from my local BMW dealer. Took the Bathurst S with me and drove it and parked by their show room. Everyone dropped what they were doing one by one they came out to see my car. Wooow ! amazed amongst the throng was a proud owner of a red R8 ute. They all wanted to nose around my car. I thought they might be snobby about it, they weren't and said they would rather have my car then a M3, M4, M5. Surprised very surprised.
Not got much time to chat with the R8 ute owner as he had to leave. I am sure the car you saw was him. I am picking up my car on Wednesday. I will ask then if it was him.
