Guys

Looking at returning to hsv ownership with a vxr8 after previously owning a ute and a Monaro..

Hopefully getting a ls3 with the view to gas it does anyone have any recommendations on installers who have previously installed on either a Monaro or vxr8

I know the haters with say don't do it but previously run both cars on gas and really can't fault the stuff.

Thanks in advance

Jason.

Whoever did your last install?

Failing that, V8TFT (formerly North of Watford), blue666uk and DJwilk all have had LPG installed.

Hi Araf

The company that did the Monaro are no longer trading and I wasn't to impressed with there work. The ute was done when I brought it. Want someone with previous experience and a little feedback from here

Thanks.

Chap who fitted the LPG to my car in Medway (Medway Dual Fuel), probably also a bit of a stroll for you though.

Nothing to stop anyone installing diy. Much easier on the ls v8 lumps with plastic manifold on top, than on omega 3.2 with alloy manifold hidden under a plenum, that I did myself. So if I can do it..... smile

Ypu could probably source a good lpg kit from Tinley tech for under £900. Presuming dual vapourisor and decent injectors such as Hanna. For example.

Last I heard it was £100 to get an installer to certify your work. You can then inform your insurer the car is on the uklpg register. All sorted.

Although it's not a legal requirement to certify the install or tell your insurer I certainly would. These r8's are worth a few bob more than any omega of course. So given that fact you may feel it's not worth the risk of diy first time out on your pride and joy and get it done professionally.

However on the other hand, there are some real cowboy installers out there. True enough.

Should also add, if considering diy, the first thing that needs checking is that the diags software is freely available, along with the diagnostic usb cable so you can set it up on a lap top.

For this reason most people go for stag as they don't restrict set up to approved installers. Where as the likes of brc and Prins deliberately make it quite tricky for Joe public to acquire these things.

Tank size was 65L but you only get 57L ish in allowing for expansion. It sits in the spare wheel well and does sit slightly proud, but it was either that or a smaller tank which would have meant endless pit stops. I keep meaning to get the boot floor re-trimmed to make it look good, but one of the not so important list of things to do. I do have the big boot CV8 so the loss is minimal, I could imagine it could be quite painful on the smaller boot versions losing any space at all. Range is around 280 miles, LPG full to empty on a mixture of town and 'A' roads with lots of motorways, normally between 40-60mph, so no real motorway cruising work. Also bear in mind, this still uses some petrol on start up etc so its not all LPG. I'm sure with more cruising motorway work, economy would improve. On petrol I average around 19MPG, on LPG around 17MPG. Performance difference, barely noticeable, but enough if you were having a traffic light Grand Prix, but you can just switch back to petrol for that. I tend to use petrol most of the time, but use LPG when doing long runs, particularly on the motorway.
The system is a Prins and was installed mid 2013 and from what I understand, the LPG ECU piggybacks/mimics the car ECU.
The filler is in the rear bumper, although I have seen some mounted on a bracket, under the middle section of the rear bumper (under the fog light) so as to not cut the bumper, but that does make the filler very close to the ground. If I ever wanted to remove it, pretty sure I could get a CV8 bumper to replace for not a lot as its the VXR ones that command more.
I don't agree with any installer that says it can be fitted within a day, that's just asking for trouble. I think for a good system (Prins etc), the fact its 8 cylinder etc, a budget of around £2-£2.5K should be allowed for from a competent installer.
The chap at Medway Dual Fuel hadn't done a Monaro before, and had a lot of trouble with the wiring looms and finding information out on it, plus I wasn't part of the forum back then *slaps wrists*, so it took him a bit longer to fathom it out.
Installation very neat and tidy, Holden Racing who have done some work on my car have commented on the install and were impressed, and Paul from Wortec has also seen it as he did my original mapping direct.
Did have some early issues, running a bit lean on LPG and occasional stalling at low revs, pulling up to junctions etc, but at 60K miles, don't think sparks had been changed ever etc, so took the opportunity to put new sparks in (NGK LPG5's I think after much online research about suitability, reliability, appropriateness for the engine etc), plus new ignition leads at same time, not had a problem since and runs really well on both.
Have done a lot of modding since then with exhausts, headers, cats, CAI, remaps, and too big a difference throw's the mapping profile out (base parameters), which resulted in the engine management light coming on a lot once switched over to LPG, but a quick trip back to the installer, and a quick adjustment to the parameters and all well again.
Neil, who does the install has been doing it for years and years, love's big V8's, particularly Yankee types, has owned many, raced many, and although not too familiar with the Monaro (I guess not many are) did a great job.

Yeah the install is pretty stealth tbh bar the filler and the wee switch above the lights which made me very happy as I had the body mounted filler on my old st220 and a tow bar mounted filler on veccy v6 estate previous to that... Really didn't want to have it visible on this caliber of car

On a side note any lpg users able to confirm local price per litre in the uk!? Hearing some places have dropped to 46p a litre in around Birmingham but keen to know for all areas as I fear as usual n ireland is last to get any benefits... Still 79p a litre locally so I've been running petrol again

the local one to me is 59.9 per litre.. but one next to the motorway is generally 10p per litre more.

Interesting how?

The fillers are ugly imo so why would I want it ruining the look of what I like?
