Hi guys,

Been a while since I last popped my head in here, I've been spending way to much time on the road lately, so the old girl has been sitting in the garage bored since being used for our wedding in August last year.

I decided to give her a turn over this weekend and after firing it up I was surprised to find the handbrake was pretty much non-existent, it grips but not by much.

The car has only just cleared 50k miles, at this kind of mileage has anyone had to replace anything on their cars (I assume the rear disks have shoes inside them due to the size of the housing?), or has it simply been a case of adjusting the handbrake to get it back on side again?

I'll only have a few days here and there to sort it out while at home over the next few months before it's MOT in mid March, so any input from people who've had similar experiences is much appreciated, as it may save me pulling the whole rear brake setup apart...

Cheers!

Barry.

Was the handbrake on, when the car was left? If so, then I think the cables have probably just stretched.

I would try the adjustment in the centre console first it's from memory a 10 mm spanner , if that does not help its a wheels off or adjust through the rear discs job , I think I did a how to post on faq

Cables either stretched or seized.

Handbrake was left on in the garage, after moving it out I parked it on a slight hill, pulled on the handbrake and let my foot off the brake pedal and was surprised to find it starting to roll.

I guess I'll give the handbrake adjuster a poke first smile

ETA - Found the FAQ and other posts with images now showing the adjuster inside the car, cheers guys, will give this a go in the coming days.

I had this problem on my 04 cv8.

I presume the mechanism is the same. Adjustment on a ramp lift will be easiest on the inside of each wheel. There is a slot to put a flat blade screwdriver through to rotate an adjuster. Don't adjust at handbrake lever end until you have checked the wheel end adjustment. I will try to find the instructions I used. Well I gave them to the man at the garage anyway. Lol.
