LS Guru's,

I've got an LS1 & T56 from a 2000 Camaro fitted in my Cobra rep currently, I'm about to pull the car to pieces and refresh things so whilst the engine is easy to get at I guess replacing the clutch/slave etc is a "good thing" to do....

Any recommendations of where to get a clutch from in UK or how to get reasonable shipping from the states? (oh and which one is currently in vogue as well?).

Cam/headers/tune nothing major.

Many thanks

Jim

So you're looking to push the motor to around 400-420fwhp?

I've bought from Summit Racing and Pace Performance over in the States. They seem to provide a pretty good service to the UK (albeit a bit slow). Never found a way of minimising delivery and duty costs that doesn't involve some risk.

You could try John Sleath Racecars for your performance parts, as he'll be able to specify, supply, fit and tune (rolling road) your car.

The stock clutch off a LS2 VXR Monaro is good for 400fwhp. Not sure if this is similar to the one on your Camaro motor. Next step up is an LS7 clutch (and flywheel), which is a common upgrade on here. Monkfish Performance can help with that (maybe the other parts too).

The Ls7 clutch is a good option and readily available over here direct from PWP. The downside is the LS7 flywheel (you need to use an LS7 compatible flywheel) is really weighted for the heavier saloon cars. I sourced a RAM aluminium flywheel myself which keeps the weight at least similar to the lighter LS1/LS6 clutches.

I have an LS2 but I went for an LS7 clutch with aluminium flywheel. Lovely bit of kit, and never had the pedal stick like on the old LS2 one smile

Don't forget to change the spigot bearing too. Knackered bearings are the main cause of gearbox failure.

Presumably the Cobra is quite light ?

If the flywheel is in good order...I'm sure a totally standard replacement clutch would be all you'd need, and save a few pennies over the LS7 option.

Whether via PWP, Monkfish etc etc...or direct from the US, up to you.

Nook & Tranny always have decent prices and fast shipping from the US

Thanks guys,

Looks like LS7 will be the way (flywheel, plate, cover, spigot, slave) - I'll give Brett a call.

Currently running at about 420fwhp and just under a Tonne so the LS7 clutch should give me a good bit of margin.

Thanks all

Standard clutch will take that with ease, but LS7 if it's in budget seems a good upgrade

Standard clutch when I first fitted the LS to my car 10 years go was old and standard, and it only started to slip after some abuse with the supercharger fitted.
Maybe around 5-550hp and around 1650kgs back then

My clutch (standard and original) has done 106k, it's fine upto 6000 rpm and it will work fine all day long but rev it to 7000 and it will only last 3 gear changes before locking out.
Ls7 is my next purchasehehe

If you want good throttle response and can pay the extra, go for an ACT. Its about half the weight of an LS7 set up and will have far more capacity.

If you want a Watts beam engine flywheel on the end of your motor and want to wait for it to accelerate and decelerate go for the LS7.

I have LS motors with both clutches fitted.

If you want stock, cheap and cheerful to do the job, Rock Auto have them starting at about £135. Plus freight and tax.
