It's time for another guide but I don't think this one will appeal to everyone that owns a Monaro or VXR8 since I'm repairing a VXR badge and I know many people badged theirs up with Holden, however this process can be applied to any badge that has a foam backing really. This guide is just my way of solving a particular problem I had and the steps I took to sort out specific things at the same time (i.e. cleaning behind the badge whilst it was off, repairing it).

This process requires a lot of care and attention since you are working near the paint and

depending on the condition of the badge need to use heat.

Tools I used:

Flat headed screwdriver
Foam double sided tape (Halfords, B&Q etc)
Superglue (for the repair of the badge)
Masking Tape
Craft Knife
Pen
Heat gun or Hair dryer (This is a maybe item)

The Problem

The underline part of my VXR badge was broken and hanging on by a very thin thread. I'm a stickler for having my badges in order and after investigations on here and searches online I quickly discovered that the original VXR badge on my Monaro is bigger (the 'R') than the new 'revised' version. Getting my hands on this older variant of badge was impossible so I decided to try and fix it.

Step 1

Here is my badge, as you can see the underline has gone as it fell off, luckily I managed to find it just after it happened. Before starting this guide I would recommend wiping down the area we are about to work in as you will be using masking tape and you don't want to be taping down or moving dust around and damaging your paint. Use a cleaning product of your choice.

Step 2

Using your masking mark around the badge so that when you come to reapply it, you can do so easily and you won't have to measure over and over again and become obsessed with whether or not it's squint. I took a lot of time and got a little carried away but in the end it really helps.

Step 3

Depending on the condition of your badge(s) you may be able to gently take it off by hand, if not then I would recommend adding some heat to it with either a Heat gun or something similar. Be careful with this process, don't hold any heat tool close to the paint for risk of damage, it should be light passes of heat gently built up to melt the glue down as much as it can be. Your can use the flat headed screw driver on the edge of the badge as well to help persuade it to come free. Don't wedge it between the badge and the paint.

This step requires patience. Work the badge off otherwise you could pay the price.

At this stage you should remove any residue on the badge area and clean the area down with cleaning products of your choice ready for the badge to stick on at the end.

Note: Tar and Glue Remover or Insect Remover are wonderful here.

Step 4

With the badge removed I had to firstly remove the old foam backing that was there. You can do this with your hands it peels off quite easily.

All old foam backing removed

Step 5

I had this extra step of having to glue the underline back on to the badge. I used Gorilla Glue which was really strong stuff. I positioned the underline back where it should be and let it set.

Step 6

I laid out my foam tape onto a wooden plinth and using masking tape I secured it at east end to stop it rolling up again or moving.

I then placed the completed badge on top and using the pen I drew around it, not forgetting the spaces between the letters.

Step 7

Because we don't want this foam backing to go right up to the edge I took the craft knife and I cut inside my outline about 2-3mm from the edge. This picture doesn't look pretty but it worked smile

Step 8

I then removed my new cut out letters peeled off their backing and stuck them onto the badge, and then removed the remaining backing (remember it's double sided to there is backing on both sides) and got ready to stick it to the car.

Step 9

Place the badge back on the car in the area you masked off and hold in placed for 2 mins. Give the adhesive time to take especially if the panel is curved.

Step 10

Remove the remaining masking tape, clean the area and you are done. One repaired badge with fresh backing.

So, why not just re-stick the under line bit back on with double sided tape??

You have far too much time on your hands !! hehe

Rather than a head gun, use a hair dryer. They provide plenty of heat to soften the glue, but not enough to discolour the paint.

Also, dental floss is the easiest way to cut to cut through the foam.

It's a nice job you've done, but I'm with Ian. I wouldn't disturb the rest of the badges, unless you were going to restore them and it couldn't be done on the car. Too much time on your hands, but 10/10 for effort. thumbup

Well that wouldn't repair the remaining backing tape and it wouldn't fix the badge either and it would also mean the underline was more prone to being knocked off whilst washing. Not to mention super gluing the badge smile

Take it or leave it it's a guide smile
