Radiator fan and check engine message

This is probably a stupid question. Well two questions.
Got stuck in traffic yesterday and the engine temp went to about over half way on the gauge. LS2 Monaro. Got the check engine warning message.
Used my OBDII reader this morning and there is no fault codes. Is this normal for a monaro as I know they throw up warnings randomly?
Had a quick look at the radiator fans and the drivers side one is broken. Wont turn could this be throwing up the warning? Also will items like this on ebay be a suitable replacement?
