Today I ended up focusing on the Monaros steering rack. The racks original problems (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1473910&mid=147778) had gotten worse and the car couldn't be driven anymore. I had original opted to replace the tie rods however after some careful consideration I when for the a Pedders 'quick rack' from Monkfish to replace the whole lot.

When I got under the car to attack the rack I discovered it actually had a small leak and the boot was covered in PS fluid. One of the tie rod ends was totally borked and one of the tie rods themselves had about 10mm of movement in it, which translated to about 2" in the steering wheel when you are driving.

The rack came apart reasonably easily except the pinch bolt as rack union to coupling has got a bit rusty and was stuck. It took a lot of persuasion but I eventually got her free.

I left her with the old rack in my workshop and the Pedders rack ready to go in hopefully tomorrow or later in the week. It's been a long day I'm off for some beer.

Here is the guffed tie rod.
