I have got to the bottom of the noisy clunking issue I have with my Monaro. I originally thought it was a gearbox problem, however not only is the clunk getting worse but the Diff is whining when you take your foot off the accelerator.
What I cant understand is why?
The Diff was fully rebuilt last year and I have only covered around 6000 miles since. The last thing I need is another expensive rebuild.
Can the Diff be adjusted to reduce the Whine and clunk?
Any info would be appreciated.

thanks John

Diff wine is down to tooth contact and more often than not the crown wheel and pinion teeth will be scored.

As for adjust, it sounds to far gone and would need investigating.

Generally once there is a noise there the damage has already started.

As for the clunking, the lash will always create some free play so you'll never remove it all. The big rubber joints etc are all there to try and mask this type of thing

Actually I have found that the crownwheel and pinions in the M80 diffs can take a lot of punishment before they are damaged. By punishment I am talking about failed pre-load and pinion bearings. However using the right oil is imperative.

The whining is most likely gears out of mesh and might be adjusted via the side carriers. Checking the back lash may let you know.

There is quite a variance in the published pre-load tolerance, and I can tell you that I build mine tight, very tight.
