I need a battery. (or maybe just a new car)

Monaro broke down on the motorway Monday last week, flashed up 'check alternator' just prior to everything failing. Having had it recovered I was told the alternator was indeed nackered, got a new one sent out from Monkfish (cheers gents) had it fitted and all was well. Car started and drove ok at the weekend and it started and all ok when I went to work this Monday, when I went to start it to drive home this evening (it was parked for 5 days, nothing unusual for my car) it tried to turn over but then died and just started clicking at me.
Going on the assumption the battery was dead I put a jump start pack on it and it burst into life straight away.
When I got home I switched it off and out of curiosity tried to start it again but it was back to square one, tried to turn over but then started clicking.
Am I right to assume my battery is kaput, or could it be something more sinister?
I shall go to my local car assessory shop tomorrow to see if they have a battery that will fit, not fussed what it is, just so long as it starts the car as I need it to get to work Monday. Which begs the question, what battery do I need?
Also, I kept my old alternator, is it worth keeping, can they be refurbished at all?

What worries me is the first paragraph, "you was told the alternator was duff" always best to check it out yourself, second thing, you have had the car along time so must know how old the battery is, if it's over 4 or 5 years old then it's best to change it anyway,
start it up and put a volt meter across the battery terminals, if it reads 13.5 ish volts then the alternator is working ok, best to get someone to hold the engine at various revs and see if the volt meter reads above 13.5 if it does then alternator is ok
