HSV - Holden differences
Discussion
Can anybody tell me what differences there are between the GTO GENIII engine and driveline and that of the Monaro? The specs tell us that the GTO has an HSV calibrated engine, but is that just a PCM tune? Are there other differences, for example, between intake manifolds, fuel injectors, etc?
That is not correct as there is NO difference in the engine, infact in OZ/NZ many standard LS1 commodores actually make more power than the HSVs due to better aftermarket exhausts, headers etc than are fited to HSV as standard. I am not biased as I actually have had 2002 SS and nOw own a 2004 285 kw R8.
With the same headers etc an HSV will NOT make more power than than the standard LS1 even if both are remapped etc, these engines have the same cam, heads etc.
There has been speculation that the last of the Monaro LS1s have an uprated cam which was not fitted to the standard LS1 range OR the HSV range.
In fact just to dissapoint all you VXR/HSV owners, the chances are that an SS or Monaro with a good set of pipes, headers, HSV style MAF pipe, same diff gears as an VXR and an ECU remap (HSV/VXRs ecus are nearly optimised as standard so less gain is made) will actually beat the HSV/VXR, Why: POWER to WEIGHT
If you have a hard time believing this I suggest heading to www.ls1.com.au and check the Race threads.
The HSV in standard trim are better than the Holdens in standard trim but it is not hard to upgrade brakes suspension, engine to be as good as or better than the HSVs but as has been mentioned elsewhere you dont get the same cachet/feeling of uniqueness that comes with an HSV.
And for anyone about to suggest that the LS2 engined cars are quicker, well yes in standard trim but as LS2 edit or remap has not come out yet I would suggest not taking on a lightly modded LS1 as you will regret it.
