How? Erm, well, I was just listening to the footy last night, cruise control on 57 mph, (you only have to brake 3 times on that route) and planning ahead when adjusting the speed.
I was trying my very best for economy, by the way, to get the best possible figure.
The other direction saw me using the A617 and the A1 and A14, rather than M1, but even then I got 26.7, without using cruise.
The 6.0 is actually a quite economical car, outside of towns and villages, proved in EVO magazine when they got a very good figure (comparitively) whilst cruising at 140 mph.
I suppose the answer is that the car has effortless speed and very low rpm, so does not drink fuel on the open road.
Touching on a subject I mentioned a few weeks back, the gearing of 79 mph (instead of 86 mph) at 2000 rpm in top makes the car far more useful in that gear. A real bonus for me, over the 5.7.

"kev10-30" you are right about the change in diff for the 6.0l but as "vxr six" says his old car and the new have different speeds at 2000rpm which is in line with the old cars differences.
As we dont get the new gearbox (top ratio's changed) maybe we in the UK still get the old diff ratio also?.
I am sure "Stu" can help.....................

Agree with V8HSV you buy a diesel if you want big MPG.
But, the fuel consumption at legal motorway speeds was one of the contributing factors to my belief that a 4dr HSV is one of the ultimate "allrounders" ever.
Yeah, but where did I say I had bought it for economy?
Right.......
I was simply making the point that it COULD be economical, when I want it to be.
Which many people I have told have found hard to believe, including the first respondent, if you scroll up.......
It is, simply, yet another impressive part of this car's armoury.
Also, it is more important than one or two here are giving credit.
Why? Because many people are put off ownership of huge V8s, even though they like all the well-documented advantages, (noise, feel, effortlessness, charisma, cruising ability, general performance, cheap servicing, etc etc etc) because of the fuel bill. I am here to tell people that this car can be reasonable even in that department at times.

It is a very valid point VXRSIX. One of the most frequently asked questions about my car is "whats it do to the gallon?" Most people are stunned by my reply that I average about 24mpg but can get 30mpg on a run.
It certainly plays a part in making the HSV's amongst the cheapest cars to run that I have owned (disregarding depreciation on mods).

Yeah, that was me... I wasn't saying I didn't believe you or that I didn't think it's possible, just that I don't think my CV8 will ever see figures that high thanks to my lead-weighted right foot and general driving style. I love accelerating, and have had as low as 4mpg (instantaneous mpg reading on the trip computer) when going up through the gears. I don't think I could bring myself to do a constant 57mph on the M1 either

Agree with everything said here about V8 image. People scoffed and waved £20 notes at me and made slurping noises and jokes about only being able to drive from petrol station to petrol station when I first told them I was buying a big V8, but now when I tell them I get an average of 19mpg around town, and more on long motorway runs, they're impressed. Some even admit they were wrong

In my attempt at slowing down, to preserve my clean license & keep out of jail, I'm slowly getting used to being passed by other vehicles when driving the HSV. It doesn't come naturally though!
Also notice that others want to race me in the HSV regardless of what they are driving(In the unlikely event that the owner of the silver Galaxy who was attempting to hassle me this morning, should see this, GET REAL YOU T**T). LOL.

My CV8 fuel pump maxes out at 2.8mpg when making progress and occasionally throws large flames out of the exhaust on gear changes which is quite a nice anti tailgating novelty. However I have seen 30mpg on my London-Newcastle runs, especially in heavy traffic which limits your top speed to legal numbers, I'm sure the breathing/exhaust mods improve MPG.
They are absolutely fantastic all round cars.
