Hello again,

I've got the new pipes on, but the car is hardly any louder, no deeper and still fairly indistict for a V8. I think the cats may have to go after all.

However, I was also looking to upgrade the induction system, and I was quoted the best part of £500 for a kit.

Has anyone tried the 'CAI second hole upgrade' on the VXR? (I did a search on this forum an found a bit of info about it) Is it really as simple as cutting a second hole? Does it work? Are there any side-effects?

Thanks again in advance.

Assume the new system is "straight through" & 2.5in tubing? Should sound much better!
See the Video clip of Jagsy's exhaust & others from the HSV Drivers club (link above).
Otherwise, you'll have to get bigger headers, junk the cats, or replace with freer flowing ones & get the required remap.

The VXR I think has a different CAI to the Monaro. I think it takes the air from the corner as opposed to directly from behind the headlight. Some enterprising people "down here" have managed to meld the two together so it takes air from behind the headlight and from the corner.
Don't think it would be the cats keeping the noise down, it would be the resonator or mufflers.

Thanks fellas,

RSR Tyres in Redhill did the pipes for me - excellent job. looks really professional. They put in a second silencer half way down, (they said it would be too noisy with just the small back boxes) so I've asked them to remove it on Saturday morning.

That explains it, you may want to try it with out any back boxes as well.

Ok - one step at a time. I have a track day at Brands on Sunday, and I need it to be below 106db, so I'll get them to remove just the 2 in the middle of the system on Saturday morning. Next week if it's still too quiet I'll get them to junk the back boxes and the cats at the same time.

When I get rid of the cats will I need a remap? Is so, who could do it in the South East? Any idea of the cost of a remap?

Thanks again

IMO it's worth getting a remap anyway regardless of whether you get your exhaust setup changed; I'm having mine done on Friday. Reports to follow!

Contact Paul at Wortec about remaps, he can fill you in on details and locations. (paul-at-wortec.co.uk)

Does anyone know what the differences are likely to be between a cat-back system and just replacing the rear boxes with straight-through pipes?

I still have the cats, but my car was remapped for the supercharger. Others here have n/aspirated cars with no cats, so they will be able to better answer your question.
I'd leave the cats in place until you decide what performance upgrades you want to do in the future. Personally, I always wait until I get bored with a cars performance before I increase the power, then it's like getting another new car.
Still not bored with the supercharger after 3 years!!!
P.S Have heard of potential problems due to lack of back pressure with a straight through system.

I have a 300kw remap approx 420 HP RR day on Saturday should confirm. The upgrade includes a SS system front to back with a rear box, Pacemaker headers, CAI and K&N filters.

All I can say is teh sound is awesome and teh remap has creates a VTEC style seco9nd burst from 4000rpm to teh limit. Rough timings indicate around 4 -5 secs 35 - 75mph that is 911 territory and it gets faster after that!

The exhaust noise was a real surprise as at cruisng speed you get a nice disatnt V* rumble and no drone and under load(particularly in a tunnel) pure V8 racer howl. Aiming to get some noise files this Saturday to post! But to be fair very similar at idle to Jagsy's system on eth website.

Results are great.

The SS exhaust is fantastic quality. Only slight concern before getting the car back was the possibility of the 'drone' other forum members have discussed at cruising speed when getting louder exhausts - as this is my every day car.(I have to say even if it did the otherside of the coin is worth it!)

I had a standard 04 VXR cat back system before and it is no louder than that at cruise! Put your foot down and crikey. I was amazed at the noise considering it is not a straight thru system (has a rear box)

I have had V8 TVR drivers slow and listen. Under full load it will beat them in the sound stakes! and not be too embarrassed in perfromance either considering the size and weight of a Monaro versus their sometimes obscene power/weight ratios.

You pay your money and take your choice - I am very happy. Paul is having a RR session tomorrow - have you asked if you can attend. You can then see and hear for yourself I am sure that will seal it for you.

I'd love to, but unfortunately I'm pretty booked up all day on Sunday.

I'm having her re-mapped by Paul this afternoon up in Kent, so that'll be the first step!
