Further to the other thread, are there any contact, speedo or excess roll effects if I put 255's on my rims instead of the std 245's. Any experiences out there I'd appreciate your views - I gotta buy new hoops tomorrow as my left rear pirelli told me to "get lost" lastnight as it decided to blow at 100 mph! Lucky, no damage to me or machine. They were well worn so I only have myself to blame - pzero rossos have been outstanding.

Still a massive fan of the Goodyear Eagle FI GDS-3.
Got them on 3 cars now. Particular excellent in the wet. They won the last Autocar tyre test, the test car being a Monaro CV-8!

Yeah great tyre, have a set on one of my smarts, I'm sure a set have been on the HSVCoupe before but owner not impressed?

The Nero Zeros blow the Fi's away for cornering abilities as experienced in the 95 brake smart, they were on the 130 brake Cabrio too, same experience.

All subjective opinions

Nero Zeros next time on the clubbie, 225 rear & 245 front

Haven't any experience of the Nero's. What are they like in the wet? Still using the HSV for business trips
so wet weather handling is important for me as I can't choice to take it out only on fine days.

Wet weather abilities is very importtant for the smart and I find them fine, FI's do displace more water though, always compromises. Worth noting the Nero Zeros are run flat and if they go down the shatter the sidewalls( like carbon fibre shrowds) as I found out when someone let one down one day, trouble is you don't know if they are under inflated.

thanks boys.. although you may of lost my drift (no pun intended), I'm not looking at the tyre type (been well explored in older threads) but just the size. My std rim suits 245 35 ZR19 but I want to know the pro's & con's of looking at a slighty wider 255. Are there any among us who have run 255's on a Monaro/clubbie 19" rim & have there been any issues with contact on the arches, excess tyre roll on hard cornering or any ill effects on drive train or speedo.
Cheers J

Julian, when moding previous Saab's At Abbott Racing, they always insisted that tyre width was kept to a min. to prevent tyre roll on hard cornering. This even meant reducing the width from the standard 205 down to 195 on the 16in wheels on a Classic 900T16s. The result was noticeably better steering feel & control, due I guess to less roll.
As such I'm always wary when fitting an oversize tyre is considered. Suppose it is down to how you drive the car & what you want to achieve. Guess the only way to know is to try it. There certainly looks to be plenty of space so fouling shouldn't be an issue, but I'd carefully check the brake pipes etc. on full lock with the car on the ground as well as on a ramp.
Let us know your thoughts if you do go up a size.
Be aware also that you should advise your insurance co. as strictly speaking it is a deviation from manufacturers standard & they could use this as an excuse to wriggle on a claim!

For what its worth....on my 04 VXR, after an extremely vigerous workout at a well known airfield the std tyres had contacted the strut under tyre flex, i imagine that a wider tyre may have an issue with this happening to a greater degree under less strenuous conditions.

To qualify that a little more, there was evidence of very slight contact at on the fronts but only very slight and the tyres showed no signs of inner wear, so i imagine in 'normal' driving would not be an issue.

I can't see 10mm being a problem.

I recc the NZ's as the outside edge is cut away to get bigger tyres into smaller places, thats what they were designed for & Julian likes it's brother.

Julian,

I have run 255/35 ZR 19 P Zero Rossos on the rears and they did scrape in the wheel arches (VX GTS 300 Commodore).

The contact point was actually a screw holding the bodykit in about a quarter way up the rear of the rear wheel arches.

Do a bounce test at the rear and look at this point, it is where the tyre can be seen exiting the wheel arch when you look from the back of the car.

Note that the 255 at 35% aspect ratio gives a very small increase in diameter/circum, and it is just enough to make contact on the Commodore.

Perhaps drop aspect ratio to 30% for 255s at the rear to avoid this. Difference to speedo etc. will be minimal.

I also tried them on the front, and they do fit, just!!!
But hard cornering meant that they polished the struts very well so I abandoned that idea toot suite!

Cheers

Eric

Cheers mate.. thats great advice.. VX GTS would be identical rims to mine too & I imagine the arch shape & spacings are identical on my coupe to the 4 door. I think I'll stick with std 245's as I want to run same all round to maximise tyre life via constant rotations front to rear.
Many thanks JH
