last minute vmax
Discussion
Monaro/HSV should get maybe 160 mph max so don't think you are goiung to max your Holden's at Bruntingthorpe, plus any hooning will cut your tyres up a treat.
My unscientific results are based on standard HSV & a 550 brake HSV and this is merely an opinion not wishing to diss the invite.

Valid point about last minute I guess lol
Why dont you think they would max out at Brunters ? Holding a car flat out for near on 2 miles is quite a long time. I think at Elvington, my car had reached Vmax in just a little over a mile from standing start. It hit an aerodynamic brick wall.
Too short notice for me to have a go. But I defo want to do a few top speed events next year.

Just something to do with the wind I suppose, quite exposed, travelling in the wrong direction etc. If you doing a standing start right from the edge of the grass it is better than ploughing round the bend at speed. My HSV when standard maxed out at about 154 mph, 5th & 6th gear attempts made no difference. The higher speed was besed on a conversation from a known member on this site who achieved a high ranking on the dyno shoot out in total vauaxhall. Done hours there in smart cars, 105 max in my smart where I have had 120 mph before on the road, obviously a private one(cough).
The best place for me is the French Motorway from Calais to the Belgium border, only one police car, normally parked about a mile from the border at a petrol station on the return side, I think others know the A33 from Winchester to Basingstoke too. When I first got the car I did not lift off on the M1 for about 8-10 miles, my passenger claimed 170 mph but I could not take my eyes off the road, I like the parts without any bridges.

My car was at Bruntingthorpe for an Autocar article (Feb 2002) comparing it with a Brabus S58. The 0-60 was 4.6 & 0-100 10.0 as before, but the article claimed the top speed was 163mph! Well, where legal of course, I know that it is faster than that, but I've never actually maxed it out in 5th gear.
Truth was they ran out of runway/braking distance for both cars & had to start braking at 163mph for both of them.
If you think about it, 2 miles isn't that long a distance when @ 120mph your covering a mile in 30secs.

But it isnt realistic to have a xx mile long straight for cars to achieve their vmax in.
IMO 2 miles is quite long. Ive held mine for 1.25 miles from standing start, and its surprising how long a time that feels !!!!
Straightliners clocked me at 183mph at that distance. That was with 245/50x16 tyres, 3.27 diff, and just shy of 6000rpm in 5th gear.
Although it was sitting at that speed for about 2-3secs, so I had maxed out at around a mile.
More power for next year, and perhaps 190+
I would go for the 1.5mile, but I know its going to make me feel horrible holding it for so long flat out. Always scared about melting a piston. Although I'm on a 3.55 diff now, so dont know if thats a good thing or bad.

I once held 5,400 RPM in 6th in my smart![/quote]
Yep, ltd to 84 mph exactly (Road Angel). Only mods. are wider Kahn 15" Alloys & K&N filter.
Not really interested in a higher top speed, as 84 is fine for the journeys I do in it.
I'd really like paddle gear shift though.

paddle shift is nice but the paddles are not static, they turn with the wheel. Work great if your car changes up when it hits the limiter, I like to paddle shift down only & let it change up on the limiter. Having said that my smarts are the older ones (2000) and do not change up on limiter. If you get the real & original Brabus ones they are very solid & chrome plated, the Brabus smart paddles are plastic - yuk!
You would be amazed at how stable a smart can be at plus 100 mph, honest!

One day I'm sure we'll get it together to meet up & play with our collection of toys. Love to see your modded Smarts.
I'm looking to get a few Abbott Racings mods done to the new Aero wagon, as well as various bits & pieces for the HSV. So the Smart is well down the list at the moment.

The vmax day is a fantastic event. I did the last vmax in the Ultima. Its not often you get chance to max out your car and have proper timing equipment. Had I not been travelling I would have gone to this one possibly with HSV. I believe they max out due to power in 5th gear in the 160's. It would have been nice have seen one of the uprated power versions and just see how much air they could push in the 2 miles.
The addition of a supercharger, headers etc resulted in an additional 10 mph at Bruntingthorpe where as on 'selected' roads the maximum was nearly achievable, at least an additional 20 mph realised.
I still maintain the HSV needs a good 5 miles.
Not trying to be antagonistic, just my personal experience IMAO
