Here's a piece of string...
Well, it's all relative in my eyes. How heavy is your right foot? How "on top" of things like services are you?
I just put a deposit on my first Monaro - I couldn't care less about the running costs, if I were I'd have bought a Corsa.
But beyond that.. you know you want one.

Willsit hit the nail on the head:
How hard you drive will determine consumption: and after that general servicing isn't bad
I have a Fiat Bravo 155 20V - circa 19 mpg from it, and it spends most of its life WOT
HSV GTS 300 - circa 15 mpg - spends its life less than WOT, but 10 mph faster on average than the Bravo for the same trips, and gets there quicker.
2004 Monaro CV8 - circa 18 mpg - running somewhere in between
Problem with fuel comsumption is that its proportional to power production (with efficiency not making that big an impact when mashing 400hp).
You'll find the big capacity motors are a bit crap burbling around town, but your Golf was probably mid to poor at that as well.
When someone provides a 400hp car that delivers 40mpg at the same time, I'll have it!
Servicing costs are pretty light considering the rarity
My foot is a bit leaden and therefore tyre consumption is also high on the GTS.
Monaro is the missus's therefore the tyres last a bit longer....
I am sure the novelty of burn-outs and power-sliding will wear off one day!!!!! (unlikely though)
Buy one, you won't look back. You have been warned!
Cheers

Just had my best mileage recently.
Covered 263 miles for 41.14L, 9.7L/100Km 30% city, 70% motorway. No girly 50mph either, standard M1 fast/outside lane.
I have had indicated 40mpg at 50mpg which is best economy speed according to the ECM based on vehicle speed and injector pulsewidths.
Im working down to high 8.x average playing with open loop and leaning up on part throttle, Decelleration Fuel Cut Off (DFCO) etc while retaining full power under throttle.

Around town 14mpg
On the motorway about 25mpg
Servicing is 10,000 miles intervals and about £200 a time.
Tyres would expect to last anywhere between 8000 & 15000 miles, budget on £170 each.
Little bit of oil usage, bit of washer fluid, lots of polish and you'll wear the cameras of the locals out too.

Well u can afford to run a Monaro i had a modded Mk2 GTi 16V shhhh! But talk to any of these guys here & before u know it you'll be bitten by the modding bug again. Once u get in one & hear that V8 u'll sell ur soul to the devil to own 1
i know the v8 sounds luuuuuurvly so does a vr running 1 step from open headers (wink) monaro is my semi realsitic dream car vrs r kind of similar characteristics ie big engine for the size of the car at the end of the day theres no replacement for displacement and id DEFFO get bitten by the modding bug haha i do keep on top of services (never go to vw though dealers r monkeys) im almost paranoid about faults which r thankfully rare
