Electrical querry

Technical question for those who know about vehicle electrics. From two rolling road reports with ambient temperatures roughly the same what might account for a +20 bhp drop in power (bhp). Why do I ask this question, a failing alternator that was pushing out 36V, bowing the battery until it fried the electrics (fuel pump relays). Could the ‘over charging’ alternator account for a loss of power before its demise?
