Advice Needed - 6.0 VXR
Discussion
I'm considering getting into a used 6.0 VXR. I have a budget in the low 30k range, so I'm looking at a couple of cars around 27/28k to leave a small budget for anything that needs to be done - and possibly some more bhp once I get used to it.
I've looked around a few websites and found someone at Silverstone doing a 600bhp turbo conversion on the 6 litre - with finance. So I could feasibly get the car, add turbos and have change left over. Has anyone had this package fitted, and what were your experieneces?
Any advice appreciated.

As far as I know, this is a "new" system to the UK. APS is an Oz company that have been twin turbo'ing 5.7 std Monaros for a while now & I think the guys at WRC are the frshly appointed UK agents for this but just the other day they were offering intro prices for the first punters to step up to the plate. (see their thread from late last week I think?)For that reason, I assume there ain't any VXR or Monaro's already TT in UK, most modded ones are supercharged. Having said this, check out the APS site in Oz & look through the various Oz & USA LS1/LS6 forums to see wot works best. (mine is still N/A so I can't offer any personal experience)
I guess it depeneds on how much extra you want?
There seem to be some good N/A solutions (Wortec gets good reviews from the 6.0ltr modders) which are good value that improve performance and the sound as well from that mighty engine circa 450 bhp and bags of torque.
I guess strapping a supercharger may be the best route and would seem to cost less than the very interesting TT set up which could produce insane performance - but speak to Stu Harris about his S/C 6.0ltr Maloo...

Suggest a call to Wortec for their knowledge, products & services, I think they are the only co to tune/fettle to LS2 6.00 L engine to date, they have done a supercharger conversion on a members car here that was featured in Performance Vauxhall this month, worth a look at and they use certain Vauxhall dealerships to undertake the work, not forgetting Monkfish who again work in conjunction with Wortec. I am not associated with any of the above, just rate their core competencies.
My only experience is with a 5.7 4-door supercharger set up.

if your looking for a large capacity turbo - have you not considered a RS6? okay, it's the top end of your budget, but the 4.2 twin turbo with near enough 500bhp?
Having had a short drive in an RS6(Avant), IMO the Monaro is a much more focused drivers car. The Audi is undeniably fast (not as quick as my S/C HSV was though) & is very well finished with arguably the best interior around & plenty of toys/great sound system etc.
However I found the steering numb & lifeless, the ride rock hard & the handling somewhat vague. There was loads of traction, but you could tell that the car wasn't nicely balanced. The overall experience was void of any fun, over than being fast.
Taking £'s out of the equation, I'd rather drive even a bog standard 5.7 Monaro any time, much more fun & involving.
The running costs of the RS6 are likely to be considerably higher than any Monaro as well.
Buy a Monaro, Supercharge it to C.530bhp & put a massive grin on your face.
Tiler has a harrop blower on his and it's a very neat installation. Looks cool to. There are also procharger kits from Oz which rather take my eye, again they look like fairly straightforward installations. The complications start once the hardware has been bolted up as you then need to get it mapped so you will need good support there. Clutches are an issue as is the strength of the T56 so I guess progressive sensible power may be the way to go whether you choose the turbo's or supercharger route.

The Harrop, or Magnassun blowers would be at the cheaper end of the scale, and will give good increases.
Installations are usually pretty neat too.
Check out the US GTO forums for more info.

Has anyone in the UK considered fitting one of the rear mount turbo setups yet ? Laughable it may seem, but it seems to work well for an awful lot of people.

Twin Screw blower tops all the time,ie Whipple/Autorotor.Look at Kenne Bell or Starr sites and see the difference in power as against the Eaton type blower,as used by Ford, etc. My experience, roots type(Eaton) looses boost at say 5000 up whereas screw type(Whipple) maintains steady boost pressure all the way to max rpm..
Whilst I havent used either the twin screw or Maggie type, from what I see around the world, unless you intend pushing over 600+, the Maggie will cope, and be a lot cheaper than the twin screw.
BTW Maggie = Magnassun blower, Rootes style positive displacement
Above that the twin screw would have benefits for sure, but there arent really many people pushing it that hard.
You just have to look through the forced induction section of the GTO forum over in the US, to see the results they are getting.

As i am not not that technically savvy....benefits of turbo over supercharger and vice versa ?
Superchargers tend to be easier to install and give instant grunt off the line, maybe running out of puff higher up the rev range. They can give linier power so may be good for traction. Turbo's take a few revs to get up to full boost but then they have to be held back by wastegates which dump excess boost. They make gobs of power in the mid range and upper rpms, are harder to package from an exhaust manifold point of view and produce heat in the engine bay which has to be managed carefully. Superchargers need engine power to drive them whereas turbochargers are driven by exhaust gasses.
I think the centrifugal superchargers are the most efficient but those harrops have it in the looks department and fit nicely in the 'V'.

Which is best....How long is a piece of string.
Each one has good points and bad. You need to know exactly what you want from the car and choose the best package for you.
Of all the blowers the twin screw probably is the most efficient in many ways. Its also the most expensive.
Car usage, and ultimate power goals will affect which options suits best.
If ultimate power/torque is your goal, then the turbo will always win.
Depends on what power delivery you want, what sort of torque delivery. Overall HP/Tq numbers.
