I am going to buy a Monaro but have a problem do I spend £ 28k on a 7,000 mile VXR 05 or £18k on a 21,000 mile 04 5.7 - will the extra £10 k be worth it or should I spend the £10k on something else and have the cheaper one - are the VXR's that much better would you say - Has anyone has owned both types

Any thoughts appreciated

Cheers

My preference would be the VXR as it is an HSV as opposed to the Monaro being a Holden, the styling & euipment levels are different & worth the xtra expenditure IMHO. Having said that if you were going to modify the vehicle then the Monaro would be a cheaper platform to start with. There will be plenty of opinions coming forward on this I am sure.

I'd be inclined to suggest the 04 version. The £10k saving will go a very long way to modifying it to be a much better performer than the VXR will ever be for the same money...

Boot space might also be a consideration. The early cars have a much bigger boot, due to the fuel tank being underneath the car, rather than in the boot area, which was done so it could have twin exhausts at the rear.

If you just want a standard car, and have little interest in upgrading, then the VXR may be the better choice.

In the end, it all boils down to money really though.

thanks for that the boot is a concern but then the vxr looks a lot better as for mods I'd like a sports exhaust for the vxr the other I would probably leave as selling a modded 5.7 wouldn't be too easy - not sure how long i would keep it depends how we get on !!!

The 10k would otherwise probably stay in the bank seems a shame not to use it - aiming at the vxr at the moment

Exhaust and tuneup.. No physical changes required. But it will run a hell of a lot better.

Any good ideas / places / companies for a sports exhaust and tune ? rather than a vauxhall £2k job - seems a bit excessive to me

Best option, fit a Wortec exhaust which includes dyno tune & options on how loud you want for half the 'V' price, many satisfied customers too or Linden Special Vehicles which have some interesting deals currently, they have dyno facilities too

have a look at the links page on the drivers club site www.hsvdriversclub.co.uk ......lots of options

my pick list would be.

1. 2005 VXR 6.0L = Best car without mods awsome car with mods!!
2. 2005 CV8 5.7L = Best value for money (performance per pound with map and exhaust)
3. 2004 VXR 5.7L = Rare and a classic!!!
4. 2004 CV8 5.7L = Best staring point if you are going to do major mods....

Agree with the above, and Paul it would have been extremely easy for you to word your post as a plug for Wortec products, I commend you for solely posting a link!
