Thank you all for your comments about modifications. I'm looking for further advice concerning insurance. Just spoken to my insurer Admiral about the effect on my insurance of a Wortec Sport pac, and they would not cover me because of the re-mapping. Could anybody advice on a more sympathatic insurer. Also please excuse my ignorance but is re-mapping and chipping the same thing.

A re-map is a change to the firmware in the cars existing engine management system.
A re-chip is as it implies, a new processor with a different firmware on board.
The Wortec changes are re-maps not re-chips.

It's funny you say that Admiral wont cover you because Elephant (part of Admiral group) were the same until I explained that it was a re-map not a re-chip and then they were fine.
They charged me £42.

I have always found (www.greenlightinsurance.com) to be good.

Waits for about 10,000 more posts with different insurers

We have spoken to a few owners who have had problems with the terminology of Chip/remap etc.........

The best way to explain it to the insurance company is.....you have had an "ECU up grade".....

In your case you could also say it was up graded at your local Vauxhall Dealer...as this might help.

Try MCE Insurance, Adrian Flux or any of the Yank-friendly insurers in the back of Classic American (Sure Term Direct, Stevenage etc)

Tried Adrian Flux so far a £500+ increase in premium and need to upgrade to a thatcham 1 immobolisier. That's a little more than i'm willing to pay for a sports pac. I'll just have to imagine what a V8 should sound like.

Tesco need to know the percentage uplift in power over standard, then your premium will go up by a different perecentage

I had a similar problem with the NFU -oooaarrr!
The premium extras nearly doubled cost of insurance.
Now got insurance through RAC direct.
This was not as straight forward as it should have been mind - I told them all of the mods done over the phone and confirmed it, but when policy arrived some of them were not listed.
Phoned them back and complained, they said I hadn't mentioned all the mods and wanted an extra £50. We had a straight forward disagreement and it was agreed they would listen to the original recordings of the phone conversations - 2/3 weeks later got an updated policy document with all the mods listed and no extra charge.
On the plus side they were the cheapest I found

Followed Pauls advice reference "ECU upgrade" then four weeks later brought up the subject of exhausts and air intakes. Taking it in two stages with the insurance company saved me over £200.

Before I ended up with my insurer (Vauxhall insurance) I had 3 different insurers agree to provide cover and then they sent me a policy with critical items/facts missed off the policy. In each case I challenged them to check the recording of the call and they then admitted their mistake but still refused to cover the car for theft (tracker and Thatcham approval was the main issue).

Eventually I got covered by Vauxhall themselves but it makes you wonder if the insurers deliberately make a mistake on your policy to avoid having to payout when you make a genuine claim???

Make sure you check the small print!

As posted on another thread earlier - I had no problems whatsoever with A-Plan - who have an advert on this forum main page - I told them of the mods & Brian (prev owner) told Admiral of the re-map, so when A-Plan entered the reg, all the 'mods' were in plain sight, do to speak! However, don't like discussing it in too much depth on an open forum such as this!!!!
