my brakes are dead (again)
Discussion
well just to let you all no put some pontiac gto brakes on my cv8 in january had them all groved they lasted until today when i was having a play with a nice white skyline braked hard doing around 130mph and they ar warped to death now.so thinking of geting rid of my cv8 and having a A4RS4 or some AP up grade brakes what do you guys think.like i need to ask..
What about a genuine Harrop Brake kit? Im not sure if the HSV premium brake kit is Harrop anyway but I know Harrop do some enormous disc for them and I *believe* they supply many of the teams in V8 Supercars.
Ive had slotted Brembos that were really good too including on a couple of track days - albeit on a much lighter car.

APs are the only answer. Indestructable. Done 3 trackdays on mine, no problems.
What make were the GTO brakes?
Seconded!
Had AP's as std kit on the GTS Coupe & although never tracked, they have stood up to many a hard tussle on the road, often outbraking smaller & lighter boy racers much to their dismay! Done over 50,000 miles & still on the original pads - they stop hard EVERY time & never fade. Although they came std so I didn't pay for them as such, me thinks you get wot u pays for & it's a shame that a race linked brand like HSV dont't put the big brakes as std kit on all their 350BHP+ models and offer them as a factory option on other base models under Holden/Vauxhall guise.

Fit the APs mate, they are just awesome. you can bugger about with the stock stuff, but its all pants really. You'll just end up paying twice - you will end up with the APs anyway !!
A slightly cheaper alternative are the Wilwood brake kits from any of the Stateside vendors. I have the Wilwood front Brake Kit (6 pistons) on my 04 GTO here in Germany. Currently I am running Powerslot rear rotors and stock calipers. I'll be upgrading to 05 GTO rear rotors (vented) soon. The addition of the Wilwoods has been a night and day difference for me. I let an 05 GTO owner ride around the Nurburgring with me yesterday and he was in complete awe at the breaking power you get and the the fade resistance that the Wilwoods provide.
Wilwoods aren't the best option out there...but they're a sight better than any PBR caliper setup. If anything look for a six-piston caliper...Wilwoods / Stoptech / or the APs. Once you've driven a car with these brakes you'll wonder why you waited so long in the first place.

Very true, the first mod. I would do on an HSV/Monaro, having experienced both the standard HSV Premium Harrop & AP systems. Also, AP's are nearly half the price they used to be!
There really is a huge difference with the AP brakes. Less pedal pressure required, and less travel in the pedal itself. Much more feel and control of the braking system. When you brake hard you can almost predict when the abs is going to cut in. Even though there is less pedal pressure required, the brakes do not feel 'over servoed' (like some French cars). And the APs do not suffer from fade, at all. Repeated hard stops, again and again, without fade.
Standard brakes are barely adequate for road use, IMO. It is a heavy car, afterall. Press hard the pedal feels mushy, press harder and you are imediately into the abs cutting in, press harder next time and you have no brakes as they have faded! Had a very scary moment in mine when the standard brakes faded on an (admittedly) fast exit from a motorway up a slip road to a roundabout.
As you can see I recommend the APs. Be aware though, that there are various different versions available - different disc sizes, and different number of pistons in the callipers. Check what you are getting. Some are 4 pot front, 2 pot rear. I have the biggest brakes available that will fit under the standard (04 CV8) 18" wheels. 362mm front discs, 343mm rears, 6 pot front callipers, with 4 pot rears. I believe that 380mm front discs are available too.

I have to say, after having driven the monaro around for a week, with the AP's on it, they are AWESOME. On the commodore I have the HSV 4 pots, and thought they were the bee's knees when I first put them on. Drove the commodore today, and well, all I have to say is that the difference is HUGE. The Commodore feels really strange as well, after having driven the Monaro as well. The steering is light, and well, where did the extra pedal go? (it is auto).
