Cleaning the Piano Black Plastic
Discussion
Had a productive day on the Yellow Beastie today which has been slightly ruined by a couple of things.
Firstly, the 'Piano' black centre console surround. I've noticed a few light scratches in it. It already has 'swirls' in it (started by the valeting dept at the dealership) and now a few long scratches. I know two are from me, and I have tried to be as careful as I can cleaning it and one from someone else.
Is there a technique to cleaning this type of plastic without further damage and is there a way of at least removing the lightest scratches?
Secondly, the centre glove box lid leather has started to tear just above the seam on the front passenger corner. Never noticed it before as I don't usually clean the lid as my elbow does that for me during driving.
Does anybody think this would be worth bringing up with the dealership as a warranty issue (I'm due to take the car in on Tues for the recall) or should I just bite the bullet, not make a fuss and just order and pay for a new one?
Thanks

hold off on buying a new one till I find out what the scrapyard is doing with the crashed Monaro - might be able to get you a replacement for a lot less money than Vauxhall will charge. I'd have to check condition of the black surround but again it may be available from the scrapped car. Hope to find out in the next week or so what's happening with it.
Cheers Bob,
The centre arm rest cover I'd be interested in if it's ok, but the console surround would be awkward to remove/fit. Thats where most of the damage has been done on the current one. I think the main damage was done when the new stereo was fitted.
But if you could keep me posted, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Meguiars ScratchX is good at disguising scratches.
I prefer Quixx for scratches to painted surfaces - everyone I've shown it to agrees it does a much better job than Meguiars. However for interior plastics I'm not sure how it would work. Might work if you used black gloss paint to fill the scratches if they're deep and then use your preferred choice of product to blend it in with the surrounding plastic - I'd try it on a test area first.
