It was stated on the BBC4 the other day that speed was a factor in only 25% of accidents and a cause in only 15% (might have even been 15% of the 25%). Driver inattention took the biscuit.
But hey, you cant fine inattention, its not something you can quantify, especially when virtually all police are inattentive to reality themselves. I know, instead lets measure speed and relate it directly to safety because we can measure that!
Dumb everything down to the level of your sub 80 IQ benefit scrounger and tax the rest into submission.
I think everyone should have to play Colin McRae Rally and post a minimum time without crashing to prove they can provide the correct attention required to drive safely

dont that start tackling the other 75% of causes with teh vigour they attack speeders, when speed alone isnt a danger at all !!!!!I think the 'results' said that speed was a DIRECT contributor to the accident in less than 5% of cases and was a supplementary cause in less than 20%. Either way that bill is a bunch of balls, why won't the government actually do something about bad driving instead of attacking perfectly reasonable, experienced drivers?
That's because we are an easy target.
They put petrol up (we pay it), they tax insurance (we pay it) they put car tax up (we pay it) and then they nick you for speeding (and guess what we pay it).
Those of us who love cars and driving (and there are many on this site) will always find the money to run our cars no matter what they put charge us.
Congestions charges will be in just about every major city in Britain within the next 5 - 10 years and yep you're right we'll pay that as well.

Speed is not always the cause but it does decide how far along the road you get scattered. The problem is bad driving I think everyone agrees that but (and believe me I hate speed cameras) if we all drove everywhere at twenty miles an hour then we would not have over 3000 people killed on the roads. The point of speed cameras is really about reducing the impact (if you excuse the pun) of the crash rather than stopping them all togeher.
Problem is we don't yet have bad driver cameras.
Speed cameras are policing on the cheap meaning forces can reduce traffic officers and re-deploy them elsewhere.

Speed is not the cause of accidents, I challenge anyone to tell me an accident that was caused purely by speed. It needs someone to make an error of judgement or mechanical failure to become an accident. Totally agree that speed may affect the outcome of the accident i.e increase in injury, more damage etc.
Speed kills, just like guns kill - its the people that use them.
I personally find that not many people try and overtake vehicles going 60mph, most cars I see are trying to overtake vehicles going say 30-40 in a 60 (Tesco lorries are perhaps the worst I have found for sticking to an unbelievably slow speed on open roads). Consequently people get frustrated at not going to where they want to as quick as they like and overtake in really stupid places.
I have long had the opinion its not speed that kills, but slowness and the consequence of people wanting to get past the semi mobile traffic jam.
I personally find that not many people try and overtake vehicles going 60mph, most cars I see are trying to overtake vehicles going say 30-40 in a 60 (Tesco lorries are perhaps the worst I have found for sticking to an unbelievably slow speed on open roads). Consequently people get frustrated at not going to where they want to as quick as they like and overtake in really stupid places.

Sadly it seems we're reliant to a large extent on a one-man band to represent our interests as motorists in this debate. I'm probably preaching to the converted on this forum... but if people don't like what's happening with speed cameras (and I certainly don't) and want to do something positive about it, the answer is to get over to the Safe Speed website and lend your support. Paul needs funding to keep the good fight going.

Hear Hear !! But how on earth do we organise it? The one thing democratic governments fear more than anything else is civil unrest. Look at the poll tax (which I actually agreed with I might add) Its high time these thieving sacks of sh*t were told that enough is enough. They tax/fine the crap out of the honest workers - and give billions to strange foreign countries, billions to the poxy EEC, yet they tell us they cant find 80 quid a week to house an old soldier in a home, or enough to clean up a hospital. It sucks.

It's not coincidence. It's Tesco policy. They shave 5% off their diesel bill - £2m a year!

Thats fine until you consider that going slower means it takes longer for the lorries to get to where they are going.
