New Monaro Owners Take care on roundabouts
Discussion
Just want to let all the new Monaro owners to take care on corners especially now it is getting towards winter.
Almost had a simliar thing to Bothereds today, where came around the corner, and got a bit lively in the back end, mainly cause of the grit and grime that is on the road. Something especially if you haven't driven a rear wheel car before getting the Ro. Anyhow, can be fun too, if you expect it.
Be careful on the roads kids..

you know when it's going wrong as out the side window you see the road and out the wind screen you see the kerb. Back it off slightly but don't lift right off unless you are going really slow. Or the other option is to stamp on the brakes and close you eye's, guess it depends if there is any run off. Or keep it planted and carry a spare pair of pants in the boot. Gulp. me wheels.
I live up the side of a shallow river valley and getting up with just slight dampness is fun, even in 2nd gear at 1500rpm it's like a greasy weasle, and the T/C is shit. Provided you get on the power really late coming out of a corner it's not problem. If it snows I think I'll just walk or borrow the girlfriend's Getz 1.1.
It's actually a really stable and forgiving car compared to my previous car which was FWD but short and light.

The thing most likely to catch out a new owner is that the traction control will NOT stop you losing the rear in a corner if the road is wet or greasy. Nearly stuck mine in a lake after less than a week of ownership, was the first time I'd driven it in the rain. Turned onto a slip road, hit the gas a tiny bit early, out went the back... luckily I'd done a skid pan course a few weeks earlier and managed to catch the slide before it got serious and waaaaay before the TC realised anything was wrong.
I actually think the Monaro TC as standard is dangerous. It doesn't prevent you getting into a rear end slide, but when it finally realises you're going sideways it kicks you completely off the gas, which is not necessarily what you want to do in that situation. Far safer IMO to take it easy to start with, learn the car's limits and drive with the TC off in ALL conditions so that YOU are in control - which is after all how the Monaro was advertised when it was first introduced here, "game over" and all that.

Thicko moment here... if the back end starts to go and the TC kicks in and backs off the gas, wouldn't that actually make things worst with lift-off oversteer?
Could do, depends where your front wheels are pointing. If you've already steered into the skid, have caught it and are starting to straighten the car up then the extra grip at the front can cause you to oversteer in the opposite direction from the original slide; if you don't react in time and the TC cuts you off then as you say it can make the slide worse.

Yep! Over-correct for a slide, and you'll waggle up the road like a drunk on a Segway
Tip for anyone who gets into a slide when they didn't mean to... watch where you WANT to go, not where you ARE going; then your reactions will most likely be the correct ones to get you back pointing the right way.
