Yesterday I was leaving my friends house when the speedo did a merry dance all over the shop, finally coming back to rest at 20mph, even when the engine was off! A few restarts and it seemed to recompose itself despite seeming a lot slower to measure speed as the car slows down, seems to measure ok when accelerating.

Today I went to start and now the speedo and the rev counter are as jittery as can be, so again after 2 or 3 restarts the rev counter behaves properly but again the speedo reads ok accelerating but doesn't seem to want to slow down that much, just gradiually meets your lower speed when it sees fit. Interestingly sometimes when stationary the car thinks we are doing 2 or 3mph. I had to resort to using the digital speedo but something clearly isn't right.

Anyone had similar or and ideas? I suspect it is just a faulty sendor/sensor unit but I really dont want to have to leave it in the hands of a dealer for days whilst it is investigated. Last time something similar happened it took ford 5 months to experience a fault I would see two or three times a day - whilst I accept that a dealer does have to investigate I just would rather say "this is a known problem, here is the code" sort of thing to help them...

cheers all

It's a known issue.

I advised my dealer about it, they ordered one in and replaced.

Job done

Still miss doing 200mph though....

cheers, kind of thinking that is where I'll end up but due to locality I am going to try somewhere with a big pond and plenty of fish first...

For me it's quite a rare phenomenon, but I find that if I turn the ignition on for 3 or 4 seconds (and let everything boot up properly) before firing the car up then the systems generally seem fine. I've had both the optimistic speedo and the out of calibration rev counter. It's usually only when I jump in and go that I get a problem.

With it being a very occasional (and intermittent) problem I wasn't looking forward to explaining the issue to my local dealer, but yesterday I took the car into Slaters at Colwyn Bay for a service and it did it for them. It sat on their ramp thinking it was doing 50mph. The technician said that it had stored all the faults in it's history - so he could see all the other occasions. He's looking in to whats involved for me, then I just have to pluck up the courage to have it done.

Have to say though - I was really impressed with Slaters yesterday. Great technician who explained eveything he was going to do before the service and eveything he'd done/found afterwards. Genuine guy. Which is a nice change from many of the experiences voiced here.
