LS1 engine parts
Discussion
Ive bought extensively from SDPC2000.com and summit racing. Both good to deal with etc.
Though make sure you do your research and get the right combo together. I guess you can ask them to set you up, but its good to check you are not going to get something insane or unsuitable for narrow uk bumpy roads etc.
A good set of heads is always nice as a baseline. But the key is the cam, you choose this and build your engine around it. The cam determines where the power is and at what rpm etc.
With the £1 pretty much at $2 there are some good deals out there. Including the 6.6L engine options (402 and 408) for around $3800US Iron or just over $4000 alloy. Very tempting.

The potential of suppliers in the US is mammoth. Go to www.ebay.com and search for AFR LS1/2 or just LS1, LS2, LSX, LS7! Also search for LS1 turbo, LS1 supercharged. Then when you can see what your looking for, ditch ebay and google instead but adding 'US' after your search criteria..
If you wanted to go forced induction but didn't think you could afford it.. think again!
If that still isn't enough then ebay LS2 Crate motor or google LS7 Crate motor and look for the performance options! If you cannot find something you like, sell your car and buy a trainset

oh
How about ? 7.o litre short block complete for £3500
Click on the question mark to view the add - sorry but I am a programmmer
Can get a nice ls7 with 500bhp plus I assume the mods I already have would fit for cheaper than a sc and hence more power.
Future wise I could then sc it etc etc.
It starts out at 500 plus then would my exhaust and headers then give me even more?
I could then sell my LS1??
Very, very tempting if I could do this.......

The only downside to big cc's, is that it will inherently use more fuel.
Although some of the big cc kits are awesome value for money.
As others say, if you cant find a source for LS1 tuning bits, you must be blind. They are absolutely everywhere.
Katech defo have a good reputation. I think they build some of the C5R race engines ??

Don't forget that you'll have to add VAT and import duty onto the £ prices too. It reduces the 2 for 1 benefit somewhat.
Having said that I can't stop myself drooling over a custom cam / head / intake / tb / timing chain etc package that Ed Curtis at Flowtech has put together for me. Just need to find $5000.
And the VAT.
And the import duty.
Oh, then there's the labour to fit it all.
And I'll need a custom tune....

Yeah Ed does a good combo by all accounts.
I take it you are looking at the Fast90 intake and 90mm TB too?
I take it you are looking at the Fast90 intake and 90mm TB too?
Yep. I really want to do it, but lack the funds at the mo'. Too many toys requiring too much money.
I've been warned off the FAST 90TB due to a history of sticking blades, and been recommended the new Holley TB. Any experience of either?
Yes fast90 intake with Nick Willams Throttle is what I have for the exact reasons you mention. Avoid the fast TB. UMI and a few others do cable 90mm TB's too. The Nick Williams seems to get the best reviews. Was a straight swap for me. The fast90 is setup for the LS1 not LS2, it works with the LS2, but you need injector adapters and the fuel rails dont fit 100% nice. ls1gto.com has a few howto fit guides for the fast90. The LS2 has slightly better heads than the LS1 too.
As far as engine swaps go. There is the GenIV block and GenIII block. If you want a large bore engine unless you stick with the LQ9 or I think LQ4 iron block you will need to use the GENIV block. This means knock sensors and cam sensors are in different. Also the timing cover is different etc. The iron ones (GenIII based) engines are a straight swap for LS1 guys, while the GenIV straight swap for LS2 guys. Or you could get an LS1 with sleeves.
You will also need new injectors. Short blocks dont come with anything other than the block itself, crank, rods, and pistons. So you will need to strip most of your parts, like the intake, heads etc.
Ive done years of reading and research having owned a camaro in the UK way back in 98 and chev v8's for 15+ years so feel free to ask about permutations and combinations and Ill help when/where I can.
You can retain your stock heads if you want to do the upgrade in stages. The 383 has a stock 3.898 bore, while 402 has 4" bore, not enough to worry about. You just need make sure your pistons have valve reliefs more to drop compression than to give valve clearance.
However when you cost the labour etc in you are probably best to upgrade the whole lot at once. My top current choice would be a 416 engine and L92 heads with a suitable cam. The L92 heads are only like $1000 a pair and the matching intake, injectors and TB (electronic) is another $500 odd. So for around $6000 (£3000)+ tax you can have a 6.8L engine with LS7 derrived heads ready to go in. Bear in mind its a GENIV engine though, so you need a few sensor extentions and relocate your LS1 knock sensors to the side of the block. But its all well known and documented.
Budget choice a 408 iron block (40kg heavier) with -14cc pistons for a near to stock compression ratio and use all your current parts. $3900 (£1750)
Dont forget shipping, duty and the dredded VAT. Plus labour etc.

waving engines about of that spec and cost will make you very unpopular with my Mrs. I'm trying to be good and keep spending down to a minimum for now and there you are waving temptation in front of me again. Where did I put that loan application form.........
Seriously though that is actually quite tempting as I'm sure there must be a market for low mileage LS1's in this country that could recoup a fair bit of the cost of importing that spec.

Yes there is....but most want a complete engine. Not just someone's left overs from an upgrade.
Im pretty sure SDCP were offering their short motors, with all mechanical parts requried to install into a Gen III car.
And moot point....but a 383 is 3.903", +5 thou bore/hone. 382 would retain stock bore of 3.898" as I did.
I dont trust anyone here to bore an LS1 block, so I stuck with it as is.

My take is that people want used engines thinking it'll be an easy install. They expect US prices as well. Then once they realise there's more work then expected they have second thoughts. I knew of several monaro engines that took ages to sell. The sumps pretty useless to most people..
As for the boring of lsx engines, I can get it done really nicely but what's really the point unless you're fixing some scratches? Stock liners are thin enough as it is so I'd keep the .005" in reserve in case I needed it.
Boosted.

Just putting a head and cam package together for LS1. We will be posting details on our website soon.
Sounds like a good idea. Think this will be the next step ost SC and a better cam appears a sensible option (bearing in mind I know nothing about internals).
My LS7 idea was a bit of a case of seeing them sold in a crate and thinking - ah, add to cart. Don't think it would be as cheap or easy as it first appeared.
