Police have shot the driver of a stolen car after he rammed their vehicle in Co Down.
The incident happened in the early hours of this morning.
The victim is in hospital but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.
Officers fired a number of shots and the incident has been reported to the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.
One man was arrested.
The confrontation happened at around 1.40am this morning in the Rockmount area of Dundonald after police in a patrol car noticed two vehicles driving along the Comber Road towards east Belfast.
After realising one of the cars, a Vauxhall Monaro had been stolen, police followed the vehicle, cornering it in a cul de sac where the collision took place.
A spokesman for the Ombudsman`s office said investigators were at the scene.
And he said the stolen car had collided twice with the police vehicle as it attempted to escape.
He added the authority had mounted an independent, impartial investigation to establish the circumstances of what happened and said the investigation would be evidence based.
"Our investigators are at the scene, and forensic scientists and scenes of crime officers have been tasked to attend," he said.
They have appealed for witnesses to come forward.[/quote]
