Ive got a mate comin over soon from the US and i was going to see if he can get me a Short-shift kit for a GTO cheaper over there and bring it with him (ive got an 06 VXR) - 4 questions: presumably it WILL be cheaper, anybody know? whats the best one to get? are their any differences between the ones they have in the US or will it be exactly the same as buying one here? are they easy to fit?

(sorry so many q's but any help much appreciated! thumbup )

.. its comes from Oz. So its not likely to be hugely cheaper, other than little or no duty and vat on US imports. A B&M Ripper would be your best buy for the £. Maybe £90 or so.

Probably need to get under car. You need to get the bolts off the stock arrangement. Its not too bad. Just a hassle.

So by hassle does that mean it's a DIY job for someone used to working with spanners?

Yes, it's diy job, a ramp would be helpful though.

Spot on, sounds like I'll be getting one ordered up and taking the toolkit home from work for the first time in a while

Yeah I did mine ok too. Maybe a 1-2 hr job. There are some good howto picture tutorials on www.ls1gto.com.

Just remember the gear nob pulls straight up on the shifter not twist.

having watched mine being fitted I'd say its ambitious to do at home on a couple of axle stands and a trolley jack. To get at a couple of the bolts its much easier to drop the gearbox onto a support stand with the car up on a set of ramps - otherwise you're working with your arm at weird angles around the exhaust and gearbox and you could be there for some hours, there really isnt a lot of room. If you're coming over for Brands I'd suggest you book car in and get it fitted while you're here by one of the usual suspects Monkfish, LSV, Greens etc Yeah the instructions make it look easy and I was going to do it myself - one job I'm glad I didnt tackle.

I had thought about it, but it would be damn short notice to drop on the guys

It's something that I will be either doing myself or getting done prior to Performance Vauxhall/Ultimate Street Car so that I can pick up some timing slips for the big beastie to go along with the years and years of Astra slips I have already...

short notice but if they have stock I'm sure at least one of them will try and accomodate you in exchange for some folding money - I paid 350 for my ripshifter - inc fitting

So don't go punching yourself in the face if it's a bit tight!
