Am I right in thinking that the tax band a car falls into is related to when it is made or declared new by the first person to register it? I guess with our cars where the build dates are clearly displayed on build tags we could contest the registration and look for a rebate. I guess this would have a large negative effect of re-sale value though as car would be re-registered on an older age-related plate?

Anyone brave enough to try this?

The tax is based on date of first registration and not date of build. Without getting the government to completely alter the basis of taxation you would never get away with it.

So we will see cars registered before march 23 2006 avertised as being cheaper to tax, come next year by as much as £180, I think the next goverments will address the situation, but it will be at the detriment of the lower taxed vehicles
