Sorry if this has been done to death but I've tried using the search facility but its still difficult to get a definitive answer. I've also looked through DVLA and HMC&E and just seem to get more questions than answers.

The bottom line is that due to my current situation regarding employment (or lack of) and the fact that I have a nice industrial tribunal case coming up which is directly linked to my employment I have had to sell my HSV GTS. I would like another at some stage though and would like some info on imports.

The car I have my eye on is not new and is at a dealers in Queensland. From what I can gather, to avoid import tax or VAT I would have to own it in Oz for 12 months. Not really that practical for me. I guess therefor that I'm going to get a bit of a shafting from Mr Taxman if I were to bring it over. Again, as I understand things I would need the vehicle SVA'd but that requires a 'type approval'.

As I say I know this question has been asked, perhaps if we can get a definitive answer it could be made into a sticky or added to the FAQ's.

cheers

UNLESS YOU BUY THE CAR IN OZ OR N/Z AND USE IT THERE FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS THERE IS NO WAY OF GETTING ONE OF THESE CARS ON THE ROAD HERE IT CAN ONLY BE IMPORTED AS A PERSONAL IMPORT, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE TO OWN IT, HAVE PROOF OF USE OF IT OUSTIDE THE E.U. IF YOU BRING IT IN WITHOUT DOING THIS YOUR CAR WILL BE SUBJECT TO AN E.S.V.A. TEST OF WHICH IT FAILS MISERABLY ON SEVERAL POINTS. TRUST ME I HAVE BEEN THROUGH ALL OF THIS AND THERE IS NO WAY ROUND IT, FORGET THE IMPORT TAX THAT IS THE LEAST OF YOUR WORRIES.

SORRY TO BE SO NEGATIVE BUT UNLESS THE CAR IS OVER TEN YEARS OLD THERE IS NO WAY BUT COMPLYING TO THE PERSONAL IMPORT LAW. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS IN DEPTH E-MAIL ME

Depreciation is greater in the UK so a used car will lose a far bit if you bring it over.
If the UK Monaro's continue like they are I will be shipping some back to Aus.
