I got the opportunity to test out the top speed of the Monaro over the weekend (in a safe legal place blah blah).
I basically maxed out 5th gear no problem (about 160ish), but in 6th it didn't get much past 145.
I have a 04 with the performance pac. I am thinking of getting the diff upgrade & headers. Will I see much change to the VMAX?
I am not looking to brake any land speed records, more out of curiosity really.

Thanks. I plugged in 3.7 & 3.9 and they came out the same!http://www.leetfighter.com/~mackie/monaro.txt

3.91 diff @ 70 mph = 1857rpm in 6th. Divide 70 by 1,875 = 37.6 mph @ 1000rpm. 6th is 50% overdrive, so in 4th is 25.12 mph @ 1000rpm, 5th is 25% overdrive so 31.40 mph @ 1000rpm. Multiply by 6 for speed @ 6000rpm. 6 x 31.40 = 188.40 mph @ 6000rpm in 5th. Figures compliments of Roger at Monkfish.

HSV GTS figures (5.7litre LS1) are with OE 3.73 diff 5th gear @ 6000rpm = 198.75 mph, with 3.91 diff 5th gear @ 6000rpm = 188.4 mph. With 3.91 diff 6th gear @ 6000rpm = 226.14 mph.
you sure about those figures ? Edited by Paul-C on Monday 28th May 11:37
For it to be pulling circa 198mph, with even the tall 5th ratio at 0.74 and a 3.91 diff at 6000rpm, it would need some massive wheels !!!! ( gear calc says 265/35/21 would do it on a 3.46 diff...it would need to be on 23" wheels with a 3.73 diff )
But dont the Holden cars use the shorter gearset, with the 0.83 5th gear ? if so, at 6000rpm, 5th, 3.73, you would need 27" wheels to hit 198 at 6000rpm...give or take a bit.

Only the 05 CV8 uses the shorter ratio (M12) gearbox i think (0.84 5th). Although looking online the 2004 GTO seems to have that gearbox too but I'm pretty sure my 2004 CV8 does not.
Speed at 6000rpm in 5th (0.74) with a 3.91 final drive ratio and rolling on 235/40R18 tyres will yeild a top speed (in that gear) of 157mph and in 6th will do 232mph if you have enough power
With a 3.46 diff it'll be doing 177mph @ 6000rpm in 5th.
With a 3.46 diff and 0.84 5th gear it'll do 156mph @ 6000rpm.
With a 3.91 diff and 0.84 5th gear it'll do a mere 138mph @ 6000rpm.

Yes I am sure Stevie. Was given them by Roger of Monkfish. Have you misread it? It says 198.75 @ 6000rpm with 3.73 diff in 5th, not 3.91.

Have been trying to find out by scrolling thru depressingly large number of pages on Google.........only definative answer I have found so far is reply from 'c4b' in link..........

Thanks for your help guys, as you can tell ive been trying to get info from everywhere, with different good info all the time its starting to get real confusing.some guys on other forums are posting that the t56 and holden m6 are identical boxes with no strength difference at all,im not saying your wrong,as this is a HSV site with people that drive HSV's not done up holdens, but is your info 100% correct or a assumption that they are stronger because it is a HSV ??
I can assure you that your gearbox is EXACTLY the same as in any other VTII Holden (eg. "SS"
. The only difference in the driveline of the Clubsport is the diff ratio (which is 3.7:1). All GENIII VTII's use the T56 manual gearbox. Paul-C said:

No way will it do 198 in 5th at 6000rpm on a 3.73, unless it has huge wheels. Try it in any gear ratio calculator you can find

Very similar to my '04 CV8 (has the linden s2 on it) got an indicated 165 mph on the speedo in 5th on the Autobahn a few years back. Just didn't bother with 6th at all, gearing is way too high. The car felt a bit floaty at that speed so i'm having the the road response and lower springs/dampers, and the focus engine pack fitted in a couple of weeks. I'm gonna have another go at max speed run again in a month or two. I'm also having the diff cover fitted which holds the rear diff in place better, so that should help too.
I wasn't intending changing the rear diff ratio ... yet... but I like the idea of the box in car being the converted from a leggy 6 speed overdrive, to a close ratio six ... i already have the ripshifter. Car has been dyno'ed several times by various people and puts out 392 bhp at the rear wheels. Hoping for a bit more with the focus pac. How much is a diff conversion? What v max speed should I expect?
