Hi all,

Anyone got experience with breakdown services and our cars? I don't have one at the moment, but am doing major continental travel this summer and don't want to be stuck somewhere with wife and baby in the car.

I've never used a breakdown service before so have no idea who's good and who's not. I need a company that won't go "huh?" when I tell them what car it is (VT2 HSV GTS), and I need mainland Euro cover. Any suggestions?

Well been with RAC & AA, each experience resulted in the job being subbed to another contractor, staying with the AA in conjuction with their European service. Just have to tell them you need a low loader (if you break down) as the car cannot be towed, they don't like being told what to do but a pointless exercise for them if they respond to tow!

Have used them in France, they got us into a hotel at mid night & got the car to a garage the next day with a 150 mile trip (smart car), would have been difficult to organise as I do not speak French & we spoke to an English person on their breakdown line for Europe.

We just used MoreThan in spain when had a problem with finding replacement tyre.
It turned out to be Europ assistance - I think a few of them use this for euro cover.
Sorted all the problems for me - including negotiating a price on some tyres.
Did not need a machanic or recovery - so? - but otherwise they were easy to deal with and came back to me when they said they would!
The price was the key about £55 for the years cover UK & Europe - AA and RAC mucho dinero!

ADAC are worth checking out:- www.adac.de/mitgliedschaft_leistungen/Ihre_Mitgliedschaft/membership/default.asp?id=257&location=1

I was looking at them for some Ring cover, but actually a whole years cover is very reasonable, covers the whole of europe (+ the Ring..) but I don't think you can join online which is a bit of a faff.

Thanks for all the suggestions - have looked around a bit, and MoreThan looks a good bet. Cheaper than AA/RAC/Britannia, not much dearer than smaller outfits you've never heard of. £97 for the year with Euro cover seem about right?

I guess it depends on the age of the car............it cost me about £50-60 on an 05 cv8

Seems about right then, seeing as mine is a 2000 car, so significantly older. Thanks for the input.

Just make sure that your HSV does actually qualify for full European cover. Some co.s will now only fully cover vehicles less than a certain age. I think it's normally 10 years, but it might vary.
I heard of someone who broke down in France in a 10yr old Ferrari & had to pay a huge amount to get it recovered back to the U.K dealer. He had just continued to renew his breakdown policy by DD every year & hadn't read the small print that stated cars over 10 years old are not covered.
