....a gear change. Badly. Proper crunch stuff on full bore acceleration. Have I killed the 'box? How do I find out? All seems fine, gears engage cleanly etc., but let's just say it didn't sound good, so what's the deal on this sort of thing? Is it obvious if something's amiss?

You're probably OK. I'm not expert but provided it still works you may have got away with it. There may be some tiny bits of synchro in the bottom of the box but the oil filter should stop them from being squirted back into circulation. I think.

Thanks all. It seems fine, it's not in bits, and car still drives as normal. I just wondered, as it can't be good for the ol' cogs, can it?

I would guess the box has a magnetic drain/fill plug which should scoop up any bits of metallic material, so you could get it checked out at your local specialist, though you would I think need to then change the oil. I'd leave it until something more obvious happens, but you could check it at you next service for piece of mind.

Very funny.... I somehow doubt it but you never know. It seems to have settled down again anyway. If it doesn't I'll be back to have a moan though biggrin

As my old Dad used to say;

Ou est le gears?

(he wasn't French, just a bit barmy)
