I was just wondering what people around here pay for to run their cars on a monthly basis?

Taking into account any repayments, insurance, tax, servicing and petrol.

What is your monthly outgoing for the above?

This is purely out of interest as I am in the market for a VXR as few of you may already know.

Cheers

Greg

did the sums a few months ago and found out i was paying over £1 per mile. Main costs to think about are:
Insurance
Road tax (£180 per year)
Finance (cost of the loan or depreciation if financed by cash)
Fuel (£60 per 300 miles)
service costs (£200 per year)
tyres (£300 per year)

then you get into mods, but i guess these are not running costs

I did the (Irish) sums on a new VXR8 for 10k miles a year over 3 years and came up with:

Depreciation: €12,500 (€75k new, losing 50% over 3 years).
Fuel: €2,500 (5 mpl @ €1.25/l)
Insurance: €2,000
Road tax: €1,400
Tyres: €800
Servicing: €600

€19,800 per year

..or about €2/£1.30 a mile. Motoring is expensive here in Ireland :-(

Road tax 1,400 euro so that is just under £1,000, so that is where Gordon got the idea from, so my £400 next year is starting to look like a bargin............yikes

Indeed, welcome to your future.

The annual road tax here is graduated based on engine size, and maxes out at anything over 3 litres. Which means a 6 litre LS2 is taxed about the same as a BMW 330d. Next year it will go CO2-related, but probably maxing out at 220g/km.

The registration tax is worse still - 30% of the OTR price, on top of 21% VAT, compound yikes

Which is why most people here drive dismal little Euroboxes. The upside is that anything remotely interesting has huge road presence.

I smile at some of the (UK) posters elsewhere on these forums whining about how BMW M3s and Boxsters are common as muck. You don't know how lucky you are!

If I did the same kind of driving based on your costs I would be looking at £140 per month on fuel, so thats not too bad considering the car.

Hell of a lot of miles though, I'm guessing most of that is motorway?

I probably spend between £150 and £200 a month of fuel, more if I'm doing a long trip to newcastle or cornwall or something. I've only done 6000 miles since last september though.

I need to insure it again soon. If I can insure it for under £800 I'll be happy (27, no points, no claims in last 5 years)

For the enjoyment everyone seems to get out of their cars I think £150-200 is pretty reasonable.

The best quote I've had so far was from Elephant, this was for £1000 exact, I'm 23 with 3 years NCB, 6 years driving experience, 3 points on my licence for an SP30.

I've yet to get quotes from everyone, I only tried the main online ones such as Elephant, Money Supermarket, Confused etc

I've heard A-Plan and Adrian Flux are supposed to be quite good with the Monaro and mods.

I'm currently with A-Plan (well Service insurance since A-Plan are basically brokers). I don't have the best deal though because I switch a policy for a previous car to the 'ro. The renewal quote is a joke though (aren't they always?) so I will ring them up and get a new one.
