My VXR is in for service today. It's done just over 7000 miles, 5000 of which are down to me.

"The dealership" have called me and told me that the front brakes are worn down to the metal and I need new disks and pads at around £1200 fitted - I'm a little shocked, to say the least.

Anyone else had experience of excessive brake wear at low mileages? Lots of my miles are motorway miles, and I don't thrash the car anyway, so I wouldn't have said I was heavy on the brakes. Even if I was - 7000 miles????

I need to call "the dealership" back in a bit (in a meeting at the mo) and I haven't seen the disks, but without wanting to compromise on safety, I'm tempted to say just replace the pads. I can't believe the disks would be in a really bad state so soon.

Any thoughts?

Nasty - keen to hear the outcome. I'm certainly going to go and check mine now as I've done nearly 9,000 miles...

I had my disks replaced under waranty by Blues of Kent (name changed to proect the innocent) recently at 10k miles. Whilst discs were warped (or at least juddery) the pads certainly werent worn to the metal. I also do mostly motorway miles with no track work as yet.

That seem excessive. I've got VXR brakes on my CV8 which had about 9000 miles on them before they were fitted. It's now done a further 8000-ish and there's still > 50% left on the pads and barely any noticeable wear on the disks. I'm not a heavy braker but I have done around 10 150mph+ big stops (on a private runway). AFAIK it has the standard Pagid (I think?) pads.

IMHO the std brakes are really not up to the job and I'm not at all surprised they're knackered after that sort of mileage. Would question the cost to replace though, as yes it may be classed as "wear 'n tear" but surely VX should supply the car with parts fit for purpose!!!??? You can probably tell that it's a real bone of contention with me

17k on my standard CV8 brakes, they judder under heavy braking but that's just down to them being as much use as a set of handlebars on a surfboard...but anyway, I've still got plenty meat left on my pads and that's the original set too, and it's been on several track days as well as some spirited private runway expeditions wink

Sounds like you need to go down and have a good look at them to check their state or take someone down with you that knows the score as with that mileage I am surprised that the wear is so significant.

Seems a little on the costly side too or am I wrong?

Price is right as far as I know - they are very very expensive for stocks (hence the good stuff being exactly double the price).

Mine is circa 7500 miles (5000 being mine as well) and my brakes are still A1. No idea why your's would be so bad unless they were hit hard before you got them.

Half the price of a new set of AP's... Could be worth considering the upgrade. You could offset your VXR brakes against the AP's and probably come out not far from Square.

Mine went totally thru in less miles than that and thats the price I was quoted to replace. Massive complaint to Vauxhall produced nothing at all, enter 'blues' of Kent . (Caspy my Hero). Full set of AP's...........

Not f.o.c, I trust???

Well, I called "the dealership" back and although I can't get there to look at the discs, they advise that they're sufficiently scored, blued and high-spotted that they strongly advise against just pads. So, I've authorised the work, but on the proviso that Vauxhall are contacted to discuss compensation (although the post above indicates that may be fruitless). My point is, it's a heavy powerful car and there's no way the brakes should have worn out in 7k miles, almost regardless of how they've been used (it's a road car ffs, they only have to look at the tyres to see how much it hasn't been abused). We'll see what they come back with.

The brakes did vibrate as if they were warped when I got the car (1900 miles) but that cleared after a while, so I assumed that a build up of pad material and general detritus was responsible - and not that I was eating my way through £722 worth of disc........

AP’s really are the way to go, had mine on for 4 years, covered nearly 50,000 miles that include about 5 track days, no calliper service, 5 pad changes at the front, couple on the back, discs with minimal wear & do not foresee disc replacements for a few years yet!

Did a 160 to 0 ‘emergency style’ stop at Bruntingthorpe once, brakes were a little too hot to use for about 30 mins but no damage/warping.

Changed my pads for a different grade at 9000 miles - old pads were hardly worn at all. Seems like you must be hard on the brakes to wear them out in 7000 miles?

Bit late now, but we keep these discs in stock, and at considerably lower cost! Not uncommon to be spotted and blued though.

@V8HSV - is that your car, with a reg number very similar to your nickname, at a certain Kentish dealer today? Had a Nurburgring sticker on the back too iirc?

Not FOC but I was happy with the outcome. Would be unfair to say more than that on public forum........

Ah, saw it again when I picked mine up, silver with very loud exhausts and a reg number like your nick but with a zero after the 8.

Wish I'd known that, I'd have no problem changing them myself.....
