Crappy peeling wheels...
Discussion
Anyone had their wheels peel? I washed mine today and found a large dark grey patch ('05 VXR). On closer inspection I noticed it was the silver (paint? was told these weren't painted..) coming away. Looking around, another wheel is doing the same and I can even see one area that looks almost repaired (very convincing too, never noticed it before).
I'm going to get my local dealer to have a look, but I'm not impressed.

Yes, I had this very same problem, below is an extract of an email sent to the original dealer
End result was 4 properly refurbished wheels at a company chosen by me and paid for by them

Having only ever seen one Monaro before buying, I was not aware of exactly what the wheels should look like. When I washed the car for the first time I noticed that the “coating” on the wheels was coming off in a couple of places on one wheel. At the time I didn’t think too much about it but decided to keep a close eye on it. After several more washes the situation got worse and started affecting all the wheels. I took the car in for an unrelated repair in early February and asked the Service Manager there for his opinion on the wheels. His reaction was that the wheels had been refurbished at some point and that the new coating was peeling off and that I should contact the original dealer. Again, due to pressures of work, I did not bring this to your attention at that time.
Last Wednesday, 22nd March, I took my car in to yet another Vauxhall Dealer for a new exhaust to be fitted. Whilst I was there I mentioned to the Service Manager that the coating was coming off of the wheels. After having a thorough look at the wheels and showing me the exact same wheels on another Monaro he confirmed to me that all 4 wheels had been refurbished. I cannot recall his exact words but they were along the lines of “They are very poorly refurbished”, “They have not even been keyed to accept the new paint”, “They are expensive to refurbish properly to their original colour and this has been a very poor job”. The clincher for me was “We would never sell a similar car with refurbished wheels like this”. Slightly frustrated I then phoned the original salesperson <deleted> and explained the situation. He agreed that something will need to be done to resolve this and explained that after he had spoken to his manager he would ring me back. No phone call was received and today I left another message for him to ring me back. No phone call has been received; hence my frustration is now turning to anger.

I've considering putting these guys on the "to do list" (subject to them getting under the rear arches)

Don't know how I'd get them over here or how much they'd cost, but may be an alternative to upgrading the traction control.

ROH are the manufacturers of the 05 HSV/VXR R8 alloy wheels. I should know, I've just imported a set from JHP and they arrived in ROH packaging and ROH is stamped on the inside of one of the spokes on each alloy.
Have to admit, the quality isn't a match for european alloy manufacturers and I'm a smidge dissapointed.
Sadly, Vauxhall won't be warranting this set if the peeling paint problem starts.

Interesting comment about the quality. Are ROH viewed as being an "value" product in the wheel market or is this a result of Australia's lack of snow/road grit not needing as robust finish as UK wheels.
A bit of both I think. Euro alloys have harder surfaces and more importantly, the whole wheels are usually sprayed and lacquered not just the wheel facing as the Holden/HSV wheels seem to be.The CV8 alloys I've just removed are shocking quality and I think Swordfishcoupe can testify to this as he's spent oodles of time refurbing his. The R8 alloys I've just bought have a poor finish and I'm starting to worry.

Paul - would appreciate any info you have for those wheels - think they'd look great in black though!!!Have to admit, the quality isn't a match for european alloy manufacturers and I'm a smidge dissapointed.

Oh don't start me about the paint and finish on the Monaro wheels. They are not built for European climates - I mean even the cheapest cars have laquor and actually paint the full wheel rather than only 2/3rds.
DevilYellow - your wheels are the first I have ever seen which actaully has the wheels fully painted - just a shame they are just black at the rear but its a very good start.
Cheers

I bought a set of ROH wheels a couple of years back. The laquar is not up to the job on UK roads. Here are some pictures.
I sent these pictures to ROH and they offered no explanation or compensation. The pictures were taken was after 6 months use in the UK. I have now painted the wheels, to any one buying after market wheels form AUS factor in painting or refinishing in the first year.

On the ROH page that Doleboy linked to above:
"The following damages are not covered by the factory warranty:
...Cosmetic damage due to caustic chemicals, climatic conditions, lack of routine maintenance and/or general neglect."
Damn those climatic conditions! And what the heck is "general neglect" of a wheel? Chaining them to the kitchen sink? Not loving them enough?
Classic.

Just what I found, I used an industry leading cleaning product that is approved by Jaguar Cars, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen to name but a few, and told them that I cleaned the wheels every 2 weeks and they still did not respond. I know if it was my company I would try and find out why whey were pitting so bad.
you get what you pay for, especially ROH and any of the wheels from Taiwan, Phillipines etc. My mate has some ROH Boost R's on his car and they are pretty pox. Over here in Oz we don't have the salting and gritting you get over in the UK. Its poor form for Vauxhall to spec the UK cars with Aus wheels not fit for the job.
I've just read that the Bayern 5's are re-brands of TSW wheels.
Their warranty suggests that the finish/paint is covered for 2 years, but you have to send them back to California should you want to claim - which probably isn't that likely.
Their online lookup tool picked the following list of suitable rims
http://www.tsw.com/app_guide_results.php?year=2004...
The shortlist isn't that short - any ideas how I can spot wheel that'll run 19" x 9" rears on the back without requiring bodywork changes and fit over AP's (should I ever get round to them)
