slipping clutch
Discussion
Not VXR 500 but exactly the same. No probs to date 6500 miles and holding.
When`s it slipping inital start in 1st or once the clutch is out in any gear?
Had a few smelly moments in first when being a little spirited, but so far fingers crossed.
Have you been near any water with the car?

will check mileage when I get the car back tmrw but off the top of my head have done no more than 3 thousand miles. Naturally assumed the clutch would handle the power especially being a 500!
Still the std clutch on the VXR500. Same as the non S/C VXR
With only 3K sounds like you dont drive it that much.
Try a few spirited starts to see if that clears any crap off the plates, it can`t do any harm and you never know.

is the CV8 clutch the same as the VXR and will it handle the 500+bhp I've been quoted for a SC (6psi) + IC or will I need a new clutch as well ?
If your car is stock then no.
If you have mods already and will be pushing over 500 then get it done. Get the CAI done at the same time - makes such a difference.
Wait and see, there is no extra cost for fitting a new clutch at a later date should it prove to be not up to the job.
Have no fear, the clutch will not explode into a million pieces leaving you stranded, the way it was described to me was that if its not man enough it`ll just throw your foot off the pedal for a while. (ie no loss of drive in the middle of a dark wood) Then when its calmed down off you go again.
So the gamble is on wasting your money.
I`m running a 112 @6psi Headers Wortec CAI catback ripshifter AND racelogic (all of which contribute to clutch stress)and have had no problems with the std clutch.
And I have pushed it honest.

I've noticed a few things with the clutch on my '04 CV8, with Wortec focus pac, now on about 26k miles.
The clutch seems very heavy to start with ("they're all like that sir" ??) but the main thing I notice is that if you boot the car under full power, and you haven't quite yet lifted your foot off the clutch pedal, the clutch pedal goes all mushy and the biting point seems to move. Then it's very difficult to change gears. (I don't normally do this, but sometimes you need to do it to hold the revs up between fast gear changes) Get in in neutral and push the pedal right down then put it back in a gear and it all seems to work normally again.
It's as if the clutch is rapidly overheating and moving the biting point, but I've never noticed any bad burning smells. Under full load with the clutch fully engaged I've never noticed any slip.
Any ideas?

Mine felt slippy with the stock clutch, so now running an LS7 clutch which by all accounts can go 600bhp. Roger runs one in his turbo ute. But it feels totally stock to me, light etc, but no more slipping.
Might be a good cost option for mild clutch upgrades.
Top shelf is the textralia clutch if you want the best.

might be worth asking the corvette owners' club, see if anyone has one of the ls7 clutch/flywheel assemblies lying around. They had a batch they sold for 100 quid that had been removed from crate ls7's. Mine is still lying in the hut awaiting installation into my cv8, apparently both Monkfish and RapidGB can install them with the ls7 flywheel without problems. Mark tells me its only a couple of hours work so fitting shouldn't be much more than 100 quid even at garage rates. As the LS7 engine is 500hp standard the clutch should be more than capable of handling a VXR500 setup.
There's also the question of warranty I'd have thought - if you've only done 3000 miles and you're still in the first year of ownership shouldn't it be covered by the standard warranty?

The clutch fluid resovoir on the `ro` is tiny so the fluid can quickly overheat.
Pop the lid off and have a look, bet its full of crap, mine was after 6000 miles.
My guess is that you are overheating the fluid, get a better spec in there and give that a try.
