Had a go with a C2 and a C4S at the same time in Germany driving a 354PS 06 plate. Was pulling away from C2, C4S gave a good fight but to be honest he was quicker until we all got embarrassed by a new M5 who clearly had his limiter removed as i was at about 160 leptons and he came past us like we werent moving!!
Outpaced an R1 in a straight line, admittedly it took 130 mph to be reached before I got past and whilst doing that we left a new porker (4-wheel drive version, Carera 4?) with some journalist in it. Best was over taking a Testarossa whilst he was overtaking a car, after that he followed me for miles wanting to play. Favourite was showing a red VXR one day at M6 Toll booths what happens when you fit a blower!
I had a 996 Turbo until a couple of months ago.
In a straight line I guess it is a close call for anyone with a car tuned to 550bhp+ (or lightened) against a standard 996 Turbo, but around the twisty bits on a public round IMHO the Porsche will always win unless extraordinary changes have been made to a Monaro.
That said the reason I now have Monaro and NOT a 996 Turbo is because the Monaro is more fun.
The Porsche is a superb car and great engineering showcase.... but its weakness is it is too clinical. I am enjoying the Monaro more, and for a fraction of the cost.

Spent a week with a 993 C2 & a 996 Turbo on the Furball Alpine tour.
Straight line 993 was slower and 996 faster!
Some other comparisons... RS4, F360, Esprit V8 - nothing in it. All was tested from about 30 to 160 mph many many times!
When the road gets twisty it is down to skill and balls. I was throwing the Monaro around, sliding out of corners and having a hoot. The RS4 seemed to do the job just as well, devastatingly quick. Perhaps it was the drivers or the confidence they got from being close to the edge but the Audi & I tended to lose the 'supercars' over a long run.
BTW, its a 04 with sport pac & APs (a complete must when hammering it).

The '805 bhp' Monaro presently advertised elsewhere would certainly beat most things in a straight line. We were actually requested to put a NOS system on it as well at one stage but this turned out to be a mod too far for the customer and we removed it before anything nasty happened.
We're actually nearly complete on an even quicker Monaro (benefiting from about five years of further knowledge/development over the silver one). Again, although there are many mods to the suspension, I can't see it beating a Porche on a twisty road, all other things being equal. There again, a Porche wouldn't beat a quick Caterham in similar circumstances, but all we're proving is that the laws of physics operate.
