Hi Guys

I'm having great difficulty in finding suitable tyres for my Monaro VXR. When purchased private it had Pirelli Rosso's on front and Dunlops on rear but felt like driving a boat and was all over the road at high speed. Went to Monkfish and had the Diff and AP brakes fitted and Roger noticed the same on test drive. He advised trying the Pirelli's on the rear which seem to sort it.

I'm doing the Cannonball 8000 in September and fitted 4 x T1-R's on Monday and been out in the car and it's terrible again and feels like you are going to lose the rear if you turn at speed. I've even put the pressures upto 43psi all round.

Has anyone else experienced the same as me and what tyres are you using?

Looks like I've got to purchase some more Pirelli's.

I had the seat spring mod done yesterday and noticed the VXR8 in the showroom had Bridgestones fitted.

All comments welcomed and thanks in advance guys.

P.S. I'm looking for 1 x 19" rim to take with me on the Cannonball, don't trust space savers! If anyone has 1 and wants to sell it let me know.

Have you had your alignment checked? Could be that the stiffer side walls are masking another problem.

Maybe Roger's poly bushes will help firm things up a tad.

The Monaro was specifically set up with the Pirellis . There is now a Yokohama alternative , I'll find out which from HSV.

The width spec on the Yoko is 235 not 245 although the actual contact patch is almost the same, they were fitted to Maloo's etc that laterly came over here.

The Cannonball 8000 website is www.cannonball8000.com.

I did it last year as well, London to Budapest in 3 days but this year it's London to Zagreb. Great cars, great people and great parties so what more do you want! I did the trip last year in a 911 Turbo but there were loadsa Porsche's etc there so this year bought the Monaro to be different!!

Im also doing the Cannonball 8000 in September. I considered going for Toyos and had a nice offer from them in place of sponsership, but decided to stick with the Pirrelis.

Just had Catback, remap, ripshifter and road response pack fitted at Monkfish today, great all round package, real sharpens the car up in the handling dept, and the noise from the catback is just about right, cant wait till Sept now!

See ya on the grid!

This year is all booked out now so won't be making an appearance just yet. But by the sound of things, I was always planning on the ripshifter, I think I need a couple of toys to make the car even better than current.

Need to start saving for the entry fee though!!

We are car 56 so I'll see ya at Earl's court.

We've replaced the headers, exhaust, 3:9 diff, road response kit, remap, AP brakes all round, Racelogic and rip shifter.

Are you staying with the standard brakes? Found these to be shocking and would't trust them at speed at all. Foot went all the way to the floor within a week of having the car.

The alternative factory fit on VXR tyres are as follows.....

Details of production fitment at Clayton which replaced the Pirelli tyre on models other than Senator and Grange.

Description: 235/35 R19 91Z
Design: Yokohama V103
Component Registration Number: 34372

Construction No. F0273

Construction is the world wide construction for this series tyre so just 235/35 R19 Yokohama V103 should suffice.

Yokohama speedo cal;

Auto: 6184
Man: 6269

Should only read about 1-2% under actual speed if not updated

Hope that helps!!

You`ll find the Pirelli`s will tramline a little after the RR pack is fitted.

Not much though.

Tried quiet a few tyres in my time.... you have to be careful in mixing asymetrics and non-asymetrics... you end up with a really weird kettle of fish.

Toyo's - Had them before, the first set I had were brilliant, then they redesigned them, and they are complete and utter rubbish now. Similar designs to the old Eagle F1's, but for some reason they performed way below them.

To be honest, one of the best tyres I have had has been the Goodyear F1's... now after getting the car allignment done by rodger... this thing just sticks the road... it is absolutely brilliant... Had thought about getting other tyres, but have decided that the best thing is to stick with what you know. Couldn't recommend them enough.

In something like the monaro, would highly recommend running the same tyres throughout. Have done similar things in the past, and find that you get better handling if they are all the same. I guess it has something to do with having the front and back of the car getting different reactions from the tyres which feedback to each other. Long gone are the days I think that a tyre is a tyre, and you just put them on..
