I've followed the link to tune the standard Blaupunkt but still think it's a bit crap and am want a subtle, quality upgrade. I love my music, can anyone recommend a decent double DIN replacement for the standard unit? I've seen a couple that incorporate an internal HDD for storing MP3s. If I can get one of these with a decent amp and speakers I'll be happy.

Alpine have a nice double din unit for around 699 rrp - sorry cant remember model off top of my head but I've been considering it as an option. Pioneer do a lovely unit with everything including a kitchen sink built in but its around 1600-2000 depending where you buy it.

I went for the Alpine WR200Ri (or something like that - think there is a 202Ri now).

It is excellent. Mated with good speakers the sound is superb. No integral hard disk for your tunes, but it does have a high speed iPod interface which is what I use - you get full playlist, artist, etc. selection from the touch screen.

It looks like this fitted (not that I can remember it since my car is still in hospital having it's big ends rebuilt - two months now! Fingers crossed it might return next week...)

This is what I went for... Kenwood DDX-8029. Really pleased with it, and plays every type of CD/DVD you could think of. That was about £750, but I added to that a few extras like Bluethooth, SatNav, Digital TV and Ipod, which, like the alpine and pioneer, gives full listings and categories to select music from. All that was about £1600. Sounds brilliant to me, even through standard speakers.

I have a Kenwood DPX-701U. I bought this because I don't want video or TV and my only interest is music; namely mp3.

This unit is good because it takes your standard USB memory sticks and they are cheap as chips (oops bad pun).

The unit also comes with Phatnoise media manager for your pc so I can organise the tunes into folders or by genre which is really useful. The head unit also talks to you by telling you what folder you are listening to when flicking through, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

Price? £220 - bargain.

Hope you don't mind me raising an old thread here, but I'm thinking of upgrading to double din kenwood dnx7200.

I was wondering how snug this would fit? The pics above are great, but where did you get the plastic facia that sits around the unit? It looks like a perfect fit. Do they come with the unit?

Cheers

dnx7200 is what I fitted. I used the ChimChim surround from ls1gto.com. I think a couple have been on sale here recently. The whole lot fits well and gives me mp3/ipod/bluetooth/navigation/speed camera warnings/traffic info all in one unit.

The Kenwood double DIN will fit as snugly as the above pictures. The fascia is the problem. Most of us have had to import them from the US for a small premium. About £90.00 inc postage etc. Best quality (even though homemade in his garage) and best fit. Sadly, in some cases too good a good fit and can break easily if not removed CAREFULLY!

Here's the thread that I got my info from re the guy who makes them:
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4932...

There is another site on Aus ebay that sells a cheaper version on 'buy it now' and ships worldwide, but I can't find the link at the mo as on pc at work.

I'm sure some of the others will be along shortly with more detailed info. Hope that little bit helps.

There's a kit by Metra which I picked up for about £15.

http://www.installer-parts.com/by_item.php?it=95-3528

Finish isn't a perfect match for the dash (Same as _AJ_'s picture above) but a bit of sanding a lick of satin black paint and its as good as the ChimChim kits without forking out 90 odd squid.

Speak to Mark at Rapid'. There's a bloke on the same industrial estate that does all the ICE for the Monaros that go there so he should know the cars and what to recommend.
