I got called a w:censored:r by a V@uxhall Mechanic!
Discussion
I was walking to my car when I heard someone shout w
r. I turned around and there was a V@uxhall Mechanic in the doorway to the garage (not a Monaro garage I have to say).
I must admit to having been driving a Toyota Prius moments earlier and comparing boot sizes to the Monaro but really!
And yes I am considering the green beast as I am likely to be having to do 20k plus miles a year and that would kill my wallet with the Monaro. Still going to keep the beast tho!

Not convinced that the Prius is anywhere near as 'green' as they make out. One came past me at 80+ on the motorway (I was in the works van!). It certainly wasn't in green mode at that speed. If you're going to do many ..dual carriageway / motorway miles, get a diesel. at least you're guaranteed 50 at any speed.
Don't understand why anyone except deluded Hollywood airheads or econutters would consider a pious. They look crap, anyone with an independent thought in their head will laugh at you, and to top it off they are environmentally unsound (if that is an issue for you).
20,000 miles PA is about average, and on long distances the fuel economy of a Monaro isn't really that bad.
I would suggest doing the sums (total costs) of running the Monaro against buying, running depreciationg etc etc an additional car...

I'm in the process of joining your exclusive alliance, with an O5 VXR. I'll be doing 25k plus a year - my philosphy is that if you're spending that much of your life in a car - you've got to enjoy it... It makes the roads/traffic/average uk motorist all the more tolerable. I'll keep you posted re the economy of my decision.
Mr.Monkfish has my vehicle-to-be today - having the pea shooters disposed of to allow the poor thing to breathe!

I reckon I spend about 25% more on fuel now than I did with the Allroad Tdi, but its worth it for the smiles.Mr.Monkfish has my vehicle-to-be today - having the pea shooters disposed of to allow the poor thing to breathe!
I had really good service by the Toyota garage.
Prius was not like driving a car. Seemed more of a white good than anything else. Very good at it but not an expeience. Golf TDI seems a good alternative - all depends on whether I have to do lots of town driving or not.
With regard to the mechanic - I thought it quite funny as the two cars are quite opposite.

Did a 4hr m/way run tonight, kept to 85 wotsits per hour and got 27.9mpg* door to door.
Use a more realistic 25mpg, 50mpg for a diesel hatch, 20k miles pa, 95p petrol, 98p diesel and the annual fuel saving for the hatch is £1638.
From this mighty sum (£136/month) you have to:
-Buy another car
-Cover depreciation
-Tax it
-Insure it (and 2nd car has no NCD)
-Maintain it
Can't be done unless you buy a cheap old used diesel hatch with uncertain parentage, non-state of the art economy, interesting MoT challenges etc etc.
So you can keep your big comfy 'ro with 400hp to play with, or drive a tatty old rattlebox and be less safe, less comfy and more miserable.
Whilst a high-mileage Monaro will suffer a lot of depreciation to add to the sum, its still a no-brainer for me.
- at the start of my journey tonight, I filled up, zeroed the trip 'puter, booted it hard down the slip road and then joined a stationary queue of traffic for 10 mins. At that point I had recorded a personal best average mpg reading of 2.8mpg!! (and 1.6mph) LOL :-)
I actually got a verbal bashing from some lentilist at a petrol station last year because my car had a badge on the back which said 5.7 litre.. this was in Chelsford, Essex. To make matters worse his car had stick on green patches all over its silver paintwork implying that it was an environmentally friendly vehicle - this is just not the case. The 'holier than thou' approach caused me to see red and drop some home truths in from a technical perspective, but the owner was having none of it. I tried explaining to him about the cost of the battery pack which will require replacing at a cost in excess of £6k, and that could be anytime in the next 5 years.. it doesn't add up to me. Neither does the economy factor with electric vehicles because they are consuming just as much fossil fuels when you plug the buggers into the main supply.. what do they think feeds the power-stations and which source of fuel would they like to argue over; gas or nuclear?
I mentioned this strange assault to a friend of mine and he pointed me to this article which basicly states that a Hummer is more eco friendly than a Prious: Makes interesting reading.

I keep a wad of these photocopied in my car for the next lentilist that tries to argue the toss

I must add that I have driven a Pious (see what I did there?) and I was most impressed with its auto park feature which does what is says on the tin.. all by its clever self. Obviously designed for people that have no idea what motoring is all about.
Waste of time.. There's never any reasoning with people like that because they don't live in the real world. Pious in the extreme, hence the aptly named cars..
One thing though, you don't need to plug them in to charge them. They charge themselves when being being driven 'normally'..
Personally in situations like that, I would have just turned the other cheek, and smoked up the rears big time
I also feel a whole lot better by directing my rage at 4x4 owners, much more deserving...

Whats wrong with 4x4s? My Patrol has a MUCH bigger boot than my VXR, and does many more to the gallon. You too have fallen for the anti-car propaganda spread by by the greenies and reinforced by the government to get more taxes. If you actually do your homework, you will find that you have been conned! Cornerstone of this counrty was the right of free choice. Shame on you far falling for it.

Agree with JJ our Jeep has better MPG than my Ro did and i bet the CO2 was worse with my Ro.
Trouble is Govt is determined (no matter what party you support) to target the profiled 'gas guzzlers and planet killers'.
Saw an interesting articel this week where 100,000 Polish lorries make trisp to teh UK every year (actually increasing)all with no catalytic converters!
Also I reckon the age old argument of calculating tne number of miles driven in a lower CO2 car versus higher emission cars oudl show there is actually more CO2 pumped out from that the lower emitting cohort overall. Does not mean it should be ignored but like teh speeding agenda the actual real science has been hijacked and politicised.
Another piece of credible research this week has shown deep ocean temps in previous periods of so called global warming rose before surface temps and more importantly air temp. This demonstrated that if increasing atmospheric CO2 was the causative factor in global warming the increased air temps and atmos CO2 would have preceeded the rise in deep ocean temps. It was not questioned that increased atmos CO2 increased global airtemps but it did not start or cause global warming.
Hmmm. I guess we should all try and be responible but soem take it too far but whilst India, China et al continue their rapid development in reality our efforst will make not a blind bit of difference.
I had a similar experience at a petrol station being called a sad chav and planet killer - I simply pointed out actually I may well be a 'poorly informed and bigoted lefty leaf muncher' killer which was far more of a threat to their existence than my car and left in an appropriate manner with clouds of tyre smoke.

Any excuse to raise taxes!
Its been proven that global warming started deep in the sea's and co2 increase followed, not caused this rise.
Get enough people complaining about something and all it does it provide low IQ political types an excuse to raise taxes and increase laws.
I recommend a 7L upgrade, preferably with a nice lumpy cam and supercharger.

I've just read in the paper petrol is due to go up 2p from tomorrow and another 2p in April. I use my bike during the week for work (60 miles/day) purely because I hate sitting in traffic; I'm never stationary, can overtake several cars/lorries at a time and it returns about 36mpg.
On the subject of 4x4s, my dad has a Discovery TD5 automatic. He never 'off roads', it goes like a slug and returns 23mpg but he likes it. Nobody can justify driving a 6 litre car but we pay our taxes and it's down to personal choice.
Anyway, Greenies are always pale & smell because they live on quorn, don't wash their hair and their clothes are made of hemp.
