I know somebody recently posted a thread about underseal as the concensus is it's not that well protected from the factory. Has anyone had their car done and if so what are the details; is it necessary?

I'd be interested to know if anyone with a slightly older car (04-> has experienced any rust problems.

Certainly rusts underneath a treat, mainly suspension items, nuts etc. but not MOT fail type corrsion (yet) on an 7 yr old HSV, last year saw some 'bubble' rust by a rear door wheel arch, common on Carlton/Omega too.

Once I get a problem sorted out on my car I will have it rustproofed before the winter sets in. I would be carefull with underseal as it can trap water and cause even more rust in the future. The best bet is a coating of wax designed for chassis members and high impact areas. Dinitrol seem to make a range of products which would do the job. I have used Waxoyl on other cars in the past but it seems to need doing again after 12 months or so.

Has anyone used one of these DIY kits? Undersealing is something high on my list of things to do on the new GTS - I'd be grateful for any hints/pointers etc....

Cheers...

If i was doing it, id be using dinitrol 3125 for the box sections, 4191 underneath after i had sealed up all the seams with 2k seam sealer. Makes it a rather longer job, but is the best you can achieve on an assembled car.

Will certainly hold the rust back for a long while. Success depends on how much of a hold its got so far.

Yes Roger but would you be prepared to do it & how much would you charge? Would you bother bearing in mind it has 6 year anti-perforation warranty from Vauxhall? If you think it's worth it I'll pay to get it done?

Actually, just had a brain wave - who better to rust proof a car than a classic car specialist/restorer. There are a few near me, one who restores classic Jaguars; I think I'll give them a call.

For those interested in the DIY route - based on Monkfish's advice, the Dinitrol cost from rust.co.uk is:

>> You will require approx.
>> 3 ltrs 3125 or 6 x aerosols ( aero extension wands available)
>> 4-5 ltrs 4941 underbody wax ( 8 - 10 aerosols)
>> Polyurethane seam sealer approx 2 cartridges.

>>Total price of goods to rust proof Holden will be £113.97 delivered, based on cans and not aerosols

Or you could enjoy a decent night out on the town with the wife instead and not concern yourself given the multi year rust warranty thats applicable to the Monaro.

It only lasts for 6 years which hardly inspires confidence, especially as most of the first cars in this country are nearly 4 years old already. It's too late to protect it once the rust has settle in.

Bennno, fair comment I guess, but certainly for me and others here it is an issue as my HSV GTS is 7 years old now and in order to ensure it stays in the condition it's in for as long as possible, I'm keen to put a solution in place. Even for those lucky enough to have a warranty in place, a good preventative measure in place now I'm sure will pay dividends in the future, when the warranty has expired...
