Hi guys.
I have a colleague who is interested in buying a monaro, but he has heard that they are not approved for towing in the UK (he wants to tow his TVR to track days etc). Can anyone confirm this please??
If they aren't is the VXR8 approved??

I'd heard this too.

Some more mainstream UK cars arent' approved for towing either (Skoda Fabia VRS, for example)

I'm not sure if as a Monaro owner whether I should be offended or not? To tow a TVR to track days lol

TVR on track?

The Tuscan S is the scariest car by far I've driven on track. Great laugh on the straights (no having to wait for cars to let you past) but the movement under braking really doesn't inspire confidence at all. If you mess up heel n toe then it's even worse. Still, quite rewarding when you do it right.

Thanks for your speedy replies. I'll give him the bad news.

RE: towing the TVR to track days. I just see it that he isn't too confident on its reliability.

What is the problem with towing with a Monaro? It's not as if they are too small or light?
I didn't have my camera ready but I passed a Monaro towing a HUGE caravan here a few months back.

For the rumophiles amongst us... I think the real reason for the lack of approval was that GMH/HSV knew the size of the caravan culture in the UK and made sure that GM UK didn't get the towing approval to minimise the kudos destroying chances of "Monaro spotted towing a caravan"... if there were more speed boats, jetskis or motor sport trailers than "white olidi boxes" then maybe the approval would be there???

Not an ideal tow car though is it? Loses traction on it's own in the dry, without having to tug a trailer around. Imagine trying to get a trailer out of a muddy field. Fuel consumption would be a grim tale too. It could alternatively be that the engine cooling is a bit marginal when towing (this is why the Audi RS6 is not approved for towing).

isn't it something to do with the towbar covering the statutory fog light in the bumper when installed so you can't fit a towbar?

Not sure, as theoretically whatever you are towing should have all lights/signals
Towing is all about torque and I think we'll all agree the Monaro has plenty of that, so god knows.
Maybe the Aussies would know, surely they use the ute for towing?

Could it be that there might be a few chassis less sheds left behind at traffic lights. The temptation to give it some when they go green and leave old Perle sitting there..... a bit of a carry on sketch. but the thought made me smile.

Or of course the resonance from the twin wortecs could just blow it away!

Often used for towing even bigger V8's with power to weight ratio's that would boggle yr mind....

Think that would be slightly more of a problem here though... wink

The main reason for no towing capability on these cars is that the tow bar comes out where your rear fog lamp is mounted.
There's definitely no structural integrity reasons for not having a tow bar.

There are numerous UK cars that don't get homologated for towing. Doesn't have to mean the car is not capable of it.

Your right, was talking to someone with a 6-series Beemer last night and they aren't allowed to use it for towing

I thought it was because they did not have adjustable head lights so you could not dip the headlights when towing.
