I think the R32 attracts a certain type of driver...

It may have a big (for europe ) V6 but its just too damn fat - with the DSG gearbox its well over 1600kgs.

so they are trying 150ish bhp/ton v's 230+ bhp/ton.

Says it all really

I wouldn't take those times as anything other the pub figures and a bit of fun.

Fair point but even so having a large engine/V8 does not mean dominance on the road, been embarrassed many times at double figures by lesser marques, never been embarrassed in triple figure territory though, of course never in the UK

I don't take any notice of little cars. I think that annoys some of them.

Biggest problem with Ro below 3 figs or rolling start at 70/80 plus is getting power down and gearing - even with a 3.9 diff and 390rwhp/torque a surprising amount of effort was required to despatch or match some comparatively mundane machines.....best highlighted to me at a day on the full Bedford circuit. Going round twistier bits get M3s etc up yer chuff pull longside you and even get a nose ahead but as soon as 80/90 mph arrived they simply went backwards - only serious track stuff/ultima's and Turbo 996s would keep their gain or grow them.

This is an area it seems teh VXR8 may have cracked better simply by having better suspension and proper tyres to match the grunt. What do VXR8 drivers think ho have owned MOnaro's previously>?

Much better traction on VXR8 vs Monaro. Tyre wear is significantly better also, which would imply less tyre slip and movement.

The trick is hooking the clutch up right, or in my case, accidentally having a fit which resulted in clutch dumped, revs 4k = car shot off like a rocket.

I'm too mechanically sympathetic to repeat purposfully

right gear right time - sees most of the 'boys' off

increasingly worrying is the performance diesel brigade - can catch you napping..... when (if) i sell the hsv i'm going down the multi cylinder common rail diesel route for everyday car

tweeked 19 jtd multivalves give 200bhp 300lb/ft - 2.4 20 valve 5 pots give 260bhp 400 lb/ft! bearing in mind these engines suffer from lack of revs therefore restricted bhps - youre better off looking at the lb/ft and rolling acceleration times for an idea of real world speed... cr@p on a circuit however ;-)

Launching is half the problem - it's why I don't look at 0-60 figures as they tell you nothing.

The advantage of a big engine is that you get a much larger powerband so you don't have to be so precise. Even easier if you have an auto as launches are easy to repeat (bonus of a tqorue converter too).

If you see how the test drivers launch factory cars you'd *never* want to do that to something you own unless you really really had too.

I assume you are referring to the 2.4 Alfa engines? I had a remapped 159 that produced 250bhp/350lbs torque and it felt very quick and performed about the same as a 197bhp Golf GTI. I know what you mean about getting going being a problem though as the gearing is too high. All I can assume is none of you have gone down the FI route, lets just say it's no longer a problem. I can utterly humiliate pretty much anything now. Best 5 grand I've ever spent!!!!

I was shocked to be honest that the clutch didnt smell at all. It hooked up lovely too, no tc moments just a miniscule slip and off it went.

golf plus tdi yesterday, they are handy off the line. The thing with the ro is its gearing and everything means it just pulls to the red line change and do the same again. Unfortunately its real benefit can never be legally shown but where it does do really nice is rolling acceleration.

I like the fact you need to still work the gears thanks to there only really being 4 gears then two over drives

I don't know about the vortec but if it's anything like the magnacharger (with intercooler) the torque is amazing. With 580Lbs of the stuff from 2000rpm progress is effortless.
