Hi Guys/Gals,

Just thought I would let you know of a possible noise helper for the T-56 gearboxes - www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208992

I know some of you will probably have some noises when building up the revs etc and the gasket is supposed to help lots. I have just ordered two sets just incase but don't know when I will be able to try them out (Monkfish fitted my rip shifter originally). Bob charges $0.50 extra for UK shipping. I am not saying mine is noisy just I really like non mechanical noises in cars (hence soundproofing etc) and since fitting the short top shaft on the gearshift it is a little more noisy (3rd party Aussie product and not a geniune HSV part).

I suppose one answer would be to find a VXR in the scrappers and buy the top shaft off it or maybe one of you VXR/HSV owners have gone with the race version of the ripshifter and still have the top section they don't need (will pay obviously - it's the bit you stick the gearknob onto). Does anyone know of a scrapped VXR anywhere ??

Happy New Year
Steven

I've experienced a raspy buzzy noise from my gear lever, is this the noise your refer to? The gear lever does vibrate quite allot in tune with the engine note. It smoothes out at high revs, worse 1500 - 3000 rpm. I complained to Drive who "insulated it" with a sleeve of fluffy material - made no difference. I have changed my gearbox from the CV8 type to the 6.0VXR type for the shorter ratios. The shifters are identical. Does seem quite solidly made, can't really see what it is that actually buzzes. The new gearbox is better though maybe just because it is newer. Happy new year.

Hello,

If it is a buzzing noise or a normal little rattle, try holding the gear knob for a second and see if it stops. My original top section of the shaft started rattling/buzzing a little when the engine was cold upto about 3K revs - the fix for that after looking on the US site and speaking to Monkfish is to remove the gearknob itself and re-apply good silicon on the inside and push it back on. I also put a little bit of dynamat type soundproofing around the shaft to help (plus insulation tape between the two shafts) - that fixed the problem 100%. Then later decided to get the same 1inch shorter top shaft as used on the VXR - now have a rattle again !!

The foam/flease stuff should have already been on your shifter to be honest, I am not really sure how well it works as I have never removed it.

As for the vibration (but should be quiet) or movement it is just the whole engine and gearbox moving around and is quite normal. Mine moves quite a bit less since installing the Poly engine mounts - although you do get a little low end vibration noise it makes the car feel really solid. I know Roger expected me to revisit to get the stock rubber refitted but I am happy with the hard ones.

Cheers
Steven

I get the knob rattle when cold so thanks for that post! Is it easy to get the knob off, is there a guide to how to do it?

Hi Stig,

Easy bit is the removal of the panel and the top section of the gear shaft - http://kb.ls1gto.com/KB/article.aspx? Don't just pull the knob off as you will damage the clips on the knob. Unbolt the shaft and knob from the car (think they are 10mm bolts).

After that you will need to look at the bottom of the gearknob and you will notice four plastic tabs, you need to lever around these and maybe use some toothpicks or similar to stop them from locking back into place (they have a section which locks over a metal collar on the shaft).

Then pretty much brute force to pull the gearknob straight up and off - don't twist it as the knob has a plastic bar in the top which fits into a slot on the metal shaft. It does take a while to get off unless you have super human strength. Then clear out all the old black silicon/rubber stuff and apply some good new silicon (I used some which has a 25 year warranty - thought it should do) - then shove it back on. If you put too much silicon on it will not allow the knob to go down fully. I also put a cable tie around the bottom of the gearknob to help tighten around the clips. Then leave it for about 12-24 hours and reassemble (oh I forgot I used more soundproofing around the white rubber section on my car - foam type).

Then hopefully, enjoy the silence.
