Guys, Id like your thoughts.

I would adore a VT - GTS or GTS-R (Ideally a clubsport but getting one could be difficult!) Anyhoo - the VT range as most of you know was around 1999, 2000, 2001ish something like that.

Ive been looking at the price of these for a while now and cant understand the resale value people seem to be asking - for example, you could get a 05 CV8 'Ro for about £8.5k - so for a 2000 car with a SIMILAR spec to a VT GTS people are asking £12-15k - why? I would of expected a car of this age to be £6-7k - not double this?? I know the age old adeage a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it - but i would love the extra doors of a VT compaired to a Ro and would willing pay 8 k - this is what i paid for a similar year Audi S8 and love that car - but i wouldnt love paying £15k for an 8 year old car!

Perhaps there is the exclusivity factor here - i dont know, but the way Monaro's are coming down in price - i just dont see why the VT's arent?

What do you think?

I think if you can get an 05 CV8 for 8k you better snap it up, try more like 13-15k. At 8k it would be worth buying one to put aside for spare parts!! As for the price of the older cars you have to appreciate they aren't the most common car on the road so they have a "collectors" premium. They also tend to be cars that have been extensively modified and well maintained with relatively low mileage for their age. The likes of Will who is looking for 15-16k for his includes a cherished number plate worth a couple of k on its own (and its a very very fast car). Perhaps they are a little on the expensive side for what you get but if thats what the owners are prepared to sell them for then thats their perogative. Its very much a sellers market for the older models.

There are only 31 VT11 and 15 or so GTS-R from the official UK HSV imports so they are rare and hold their value.

Also there are no official Holden Commodores they are all HSV..........

And as you say you would love a 4 door and your only options are a new VXR8 or a UK HSV......

When the VXR8 comes down in value the story will change for the UK HSV's but they still look awsome.

Full spec is at the main drivers club site............

As one of the people thinking of selling their GTS, maybe I can give you my side of the picture.

1. I have no idea where you get your Monaro pricing from. If you can find a 05 CV8 for 8.5K then you're going to be doing pretty well. All the ones I've seen are up around the 15K mark. If you take that as a starting point then GTS pricing starts to make more sense.

2. Mine has a shed load of mods that take it well beyond a standard CV8. Obviously this does not equate to a pound for pound increase to match the cost, but it has a bearing.

3. Private plate - worth a few quid

4. Exclusivity - mine is one of 31 (apparently). Whilst you could argue that this has no tangible value, it is nice to be different. Also, since there are so few, if you have a good one (low mileage, well looked after with history and no rust) then again, I see it as being worth a premium. Others may see it differently.

5. 4 doors and a boot! As you allude to, this is a very desirable combination and as such, attracts a premium. You like the Ro but want 4 doors. It's going to cost, because there aren't many of them

6. Most people aren't forced sellers. If no-one want to pay what I want, then, to be honest, it's no great hardship to hang on to it.

That, in a nutshell is my rationale around pricing and selling my GTS.

The car you're pointing out at 8kish is not a Monaro, it's also not a HSV, and it's an automatic. Most people want the combo of HSV, 4 doors, and manual 'box. That's why that one's cheap. There could possibly be other reasons as well (I seem to remember there being something fishy about that car, discussed recently), but that would explain it.

You always pay for genuine exclusivity. In return you should reap the benefits back when selling on.

I can't say for the GTS as I am not sure how many HSV GTS (read clubsport) there are in Oz, but the GTS-R (read GTS in Oz)are still possibly the most sought after Commodore, and as such fetch a premium there.

It's a Chev Lumina SS (Holden Commodore SS) probably imported from Mid East or Sth Africa. This car was discussed about a month ago.

Can't help it, if the dealer doesn't know his "R's" from his elbow
Seriously though, the price is about right for a basic 4 door of that age.

FWIW, the GTS's were being sold at £40K when brought over in 1999/2000 and the R's were £50K eek( Got mine for £42K as Rod was going home to OZ!) Makes the VXR8 cracking value 8 years on at nigh on 30 grand if you shop hard enough.

I also think dealer I got mine didn't know his 'R's from his elbow either. Paid 28k for mine 4 years ago with 16k miles on the clock, it came with the original receipt at just over 46k and agree with SJC a VXR8 today at just over 30k is value for money. I think the UK spec GTS and more so the R can be grouped as the Lotus Cartlon where you have to pay 15k for a good one. For its rarity value, buy one, enjoy it and keep it.
